What is CVE-2010-4051?
CVE-2010-4051 is a medium-severity denial of service vulnerability in Gnu Glibc, published on 13 Jan 2011. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.
Official description
The regcomp implementation in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) through 2.11.3, and 2.12.x through 2.12.2, allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a regular expression containing adjacent bounded repetitions that bypass the intended RE_DUP_MAX limitation, as demonstrated by a {10,}{10,}{10,}{10,}{10,} sequence in the proftpd.gnu.c exploit for ProFTPD, related to a "RE_DUP_MAX overflow."
Which versions are affected by CVE-2010-4051?
It affects 1 product.
Products include Gnu Glibc.
How do I fix CVE-2010-4051?
Upgrade to a fixed version.
Upgrade, then put limits on request size, rate and nesting depth so one client cannot exhaust the service. More about Denial of service.
Is CVE-2010-4051 being exploited?
There is no known exploitation of CVE-2010-4051 in the wild and no public exploit code.
Public exploit code: 1 Exploit-DB entry.
