What is CVE-2013-7040?
CVE-2013-7040 is a medium-severity denial of service vulnerability in Apple Mac Os X, published on 19 May 2014. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.
Official description
Python 2.7 before 3.4 only uses the last eight bits of the prefix to randomize hash values, which causes it to compute hash values without restricting the ability to trigger hash collisions predictably and makes it easier for context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via crafted input to an application that maintains a hash table. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2012-1150.
Weakness: CWE-310
Which versions are affected by CVE-2013-7040?
It affects 2 products.
Products include Apple Mac Os X, Python Python.
How do I fix CVE-2013-7040?
No fix has been published for CVE-2013-7040 yet. Limit exposure of the affected software until one is available.
Upgrade, then put limits on request size, rate and nesting depth so one client cannot exhaust the service. More about Denial of service.
Is CVE-2013-7040 being exploited?
There is no known exploitation of CVE-2013-7040 in the wild and no public exploit code.
