What is CVE-2017-12188?
CVE-2017-12188 is a high-severity memory corruption vulnerability in Linux kernel, published on 11 Oct 2017. It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.
Official description
arch/x86/kvm/mmu.c in the Linux kernel through 4.13.5, when nested virtualisation is used, does not properly traverse guest pagetable entries to resolve a guest virtual address, which allows L1 guest OS users to execute arbitrary code on the host OS or cause a denial of service (incorrect index during page walking, and host OS crash), aka an "MMU potential stack buffer overrun."
Which versions are affected by CVE-2017-12188?
It affects 1 product.
Products include Linux kernel.
How do I fix CVE-2017-12188?
Apply the vendor's patch.
Upgrade to the fixed version. Memory-safe languages, compiler hardening and fuzzing prevent most new cases. More about Memory corruption.
Is CVE-2017-12188 being exploited?
There is no known exploitation of CVE-2017-12188 in the wild and no public exploit code.
