## What is CVE-2018-1271?

CVE-2018-1271 is a medium-severity path traversal vulnerability in Oracle Application Testing Suite, published on 6 Apr 2018. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.

### Official description

Spring Framework, versions 5.0 prior to 5.0.5 and versions 4.3 prior to 4.3.15 and older unsupported versions, allow applications to configure Spring MVC to serve static resources (e.g. CSS, JS, images). When static resources are served from a file system on Windows (as opposed to the classpath, or the ServletContext), a malicious user can send a request using a specially crafted URL that can lead a directory traversal attack.

Weakness: CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory)

## Fix prompt for AI coding agents

```text
Check this codebase for CVE-2018-1271 and fix it if it is affected.
What it is: CVE-2018-1271 is a medium-severity path traversal vulnerability in Oracle Application Testing Suite, published on 6 Apr 2018. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.
Exploitation: It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2018-1271 exists.
Affected packages and fixed versions:
- org.springframework:spring-core (Maven): affected all versions; fixed in 4.3.15
- org.springframework:spring-core (Maven): affected all versions; fixed in 4.3.15
- org.springframework:spring-core (Maven): affected from 5.0.0; fixed in 5.0.5
- org.springframework:spring-core (Maven): affected from 5.0.0; fixed in 5.0.5
Task:
1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.
2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.
3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.
4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.
5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.
