## What is CVE-2018-1273?

CVE-2018-1273 is a critical code injection vulnerability in Spring Framework, published on 11 Apr 2018. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.

### Official description

Spring Data Commons, versions prior to 1.13 to 1.13.10, 2.0 to 2.0.5, and older unsupported versions, contain a property binder vulnerability caused by improper neutralization of special elements. An unauthenticated remote malicious user (or attacker) can supply specially crafted request parameters against Spring Data REST backed HTTP resources or using Spring Data's projection-based request payload binding hat can lead to a remote code execution attack.

Weakness: CWE-94 (Improper Control of Generation of Code)

## Fix prompt for AI coding agents

```text
Check this codebase for CVE-2018-1273 and fix it if it is affected.
What it is: CVE-2018-1273 is a critical code injection vulnerability in Spring Framework, published on 11 Apr 2018. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.
Exploitation: Yes. Attackers have exploited CVE-2018-1273 in the wild since at least 25 Mar 2022, including in ransomware campaigns.
Affected packages and fixed versions:
- org.springframework.data:spring-data-commons (Maven): affected from 1.13.0; fixed in 1.13.11
- org.springframework.data:spring-data-commons (Maven): affected from 1.13.0; fixed in 1.13.11
- org.springframework.data:spring-data-commons (Maven): affected from 2.0.0; fixed in 2.0.6
- org.springframework.data:spring-data-commons (Maven): affected from 2.0.0; fixed in 2.0.6
Task:
1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.
2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.
3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.
4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.
5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.
