An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, and only if a user opens a file or follows a link.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2020-15229 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected packages and fixed versions:\n- github.com/sylabs/singularity (Go): affected from 3.1.1; fixed in 3.6.4\n- github.com/sylabs/singularity (Go): affected from 3.1.1; fixed in 3.6.4\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2020-15229/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2020-15229/index.md)","id":"CVE-2020-15229","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2020-15229/index.md","name":"CVE-2020-15229","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-7gcp-w6ww-2xv9","openSUSE-SU-2020:1769-1","openSUSE-SU-2020:1770-1","openSUSE-SU-2020:1814-1"],"analysis":{"component_type":"container_or_infrastructure","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["code_execution","privilege_escalation"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Singularity container platform","requires_auth":"none","summary":"Attackers can overwrite host files via crafted squashfs images, leading to system compromise, especially during root builds.","user_interaction":"required","vuln_class":"path_traversal"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"backports_sle","vendor":"opensuse"},{"product":"leap","vendor":"opensuse"},{"product":"singularity","vendor":"sylabs"}],"cvss":{"score":8.2,"severity":"high","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:H/A:N","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-22","name":"Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory"}],"description":"Singularity (an open source container platform) from version 3.1.1 through 3.6.3 has a vulnerability. Due to insecure handling of path traversal and the lack of path sanitization within `unsquashfs`, it is possible to overwrite/create any files on the host filesystem during the extraction with a crafted squashfs filesystem. The extraction occurs automatically for unprivileged (either installation or with `allow setuid = no`) run of Singularity when a user attempt to run an image which is a local SIF image or a single file containing a squashfs filesystem and is coming from remote sources `library://` or `shub://`. Image build is also impacted in a more serious way as it can be used by a root user, allowing an attacker to overwrite/create files leading to a system compromise, so far bootstrap methods `library`, `shub` and `localimage` are triggering the squashfs extraction. This issue is addressed in Singularity 3.6.4. All users are advised to upgrade to 3.6.4 especially if they use Singularity mainly for building image as root user. There is no solid workaround except to temporary avoid to use unprivileged mode with single file images in favor of sandbox images instead. Regarding image build, temporary avoid to build from `library` and `shub` sources and as much as possible use `--fakeroot` or a VM for that.","ecosystems":["Go","SUSE:Package Hub 15 SP2","openSUSE:Leap 15.1","openSUSE:Leap 15.2"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"Path traversal and files overwrite with unsquashfs","id":"CVE-2020-15229","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":"Go","product":"opensuse:backports_sle","products":["opensuse:backports_sle","opensuse:leap"],"type":"path_traversal","year":"2020"},"n_packages":5,"n_references":7,"next":{"headline":"Arbitrary file read un Vapor","id":"CVE-2020-15230"},"packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["3.6.4"],"introduced":["3.1.1"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/sylabs/singularity","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-7gcp-w6ww-2xv9"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["3.6.4"],"introduced":["3.1.1"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/sylabs/singularity","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/sylabs/singularity","source":"GHSA-7gcp-w6ww-2xv9"},{"ecosystem":"SUSE:Package Hub 15 SP2","fixed":["3.6.4-bp152.2.12.1"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"singularity","purl":"pkg:rpm/suse/singularity\u0026distro=SUSE%20Package%20Hub%2015%20SP2","source":"openSUSE-SU-2020:1814-1"},{"ecosystem":"openSUSE:Leap 15.1","fixed":["3.6.4-lp151.2.12.1"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"singularity","purl":"pkg:rpm/opensuse/singularity\u0026distro=openSUSE%20Leap%2015.1","source":"openSUSE-SU-2020:1769-1"},{"ecosystem":"openSUSE:Leap 15.2","fixed":["3.6.4-lp152.2.9.1"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"singularity","purl":"pkg:rpm/opensuse/singularity\u0026distro=openSUSE%20Leap%2015.2","source":"openSUSE-SU-2020:1770-1"}],"prev":{"headline":"Environment Variable Injection in GitHub Actions","id":"CVE-2020-15228"},"products":["singularity"],"published":"2020-10-14","related":[{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Roundcube Webmail Remote Code Execution","id":"CVE-2020-12641","kev_date_added":"2023-06-22","published":"2020-05-04"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Path traversal in n/a","id":"CVE-2020-12640","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2020-05-04"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Command injection in EdgeSwitch firmware v1.9.0 and prior","id":"CVE-2020-8233","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2020-08-17"},{"cvss_score":8.4,"headline":"inn: non-root owned files","id":"CVE-2020-8026","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2020-08-07"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Command injection in Shadowsocks","id":"CVE-2019-5164","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2019-12-03"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Path traversal in n/a","id":"CVE-2019-9896","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2019-03-21"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"GitHub Advisory Database","prefix":"GHSA"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"SUSE","prefix":"openSUSE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":null,"exploitation":null,"technical_impact":null},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2024-08-04","vendors":["hpcng"]},"summary":"Attackers can overwrite host files via crafted squashfs images, leading to system compromise, especially during root builds.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2020-15229/"}
