It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, and only if a user opens a file or follows a link.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2020-2004 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: Palo Alto Networks GlobalProtect App. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2020-2004/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2020-2004/index.md)","id":"CVE-2020-2004","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2020-2004/index.md","name":"CVE-2020-2004","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-p45r-9639-7568"],"analysis":{"component_type":"desktop_application","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["data_read"],"network_reachable":"adjacent_or_local","non_default_config":true,"product_category":"GlobalProtect VPN client","requires_auth":"low_privilege","summary":"Attackers with local access can read cleartext passwords from diagnostic logs if specific logging and credential-saving settings are enabled.","user_interaction":"required","vuln_class":"information_disclosure"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"palo_alto","cpe":[{"product":"globalprotect","vendor":"paloaltonetworks"}],"cvss":{"score":6.8,"severity":"medium","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:L","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-532","name":"Insertion of Sensitive Information into Log File"},{"id":"CWE-534","name":"DEPRECATED: Information Exposure Through Debug Log Files"}],"description":"Under certain circumstances a user's password may be logged in cleartext in the PanGPS.log diagnostic file when logs are collected for troubleshooting on GlobalProtect app (also known as GlobalProtect Agent) for MacOS and Windows. For this issue to occur all of these conditions must be true: (1) 'Save User Credential' option should be set to 'Yes' in the GlobalProtect Portal's Agent configuration, (2) the GlobalProtect user manually selects a gateway, (3) and the logging level is set to 'Dump' while collecting troubleshooting logs. This issue does not affect GlobalProtect app on other platforms (for example iOS/Android/Linux). This issue affects GlobalProtect app 5.0 versions earlier than 5.0.9, GlobalProtect app 5.1 versions earlier than 5.1.2 on Windows or MacOS. Since becoming aware of the issue, Palo Alto Networks has safely deleted all the known GlobalProtectLogs zip files sent by customers with the credentials. We now filter and remove these credentials from all files sent to Customer Support. The GlobalProtectLogs zip files uploaded to Palo Alto Networks systems were only accessible by authorized personnel with valid Palo Alto Networks credentials. We do not have any evidence of malicious access or use of these credentials.","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":null,"headline":"GlobalProtect App: Passwords may be logged in clear text while collecting troubleshooting logs","id":"CVE-2020-2004","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":null,"products":[],"type":"information_disclosure","year":"2020"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":1,"next":{"headline":"PAN-OS: GlobalProtect Clientless VPN session hijacking","id":"CVE-2020-2005"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"PAN-OS: Authenticated administrator can delete arbitrary system file","id":"CVE-2020-2003"},"products":["GlobalProtect App"],"published":"2020-05-13","related":[{"cvss_score":8.5,"headline":"GlobalProtect: Authenticated Code Injection Through Wildcard on macOS","id":"CVE-2025-4232","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2025-06-12"},{"cvss_score":8.1,"headline":"GlobalProtect App: Buffer Overflow Vulnerability When Connecting to Portal or Gateway","id":"CVE-2021-3057","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2021-10-13"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"GlobalProtect App: Local Privilege Escalation (PE) Vulnerability","id":"CVE-2023-0009","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2023-06-14"},{"cvss_score":7.4,"headline":"GlobalProtect App: Privilege Escalation Vulnerability When Using Connect Before Logon","id":"CVE-2022-0016","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2022-02-10"},{"cvss_score":7.1,"headline":"GlobalProtect App: Local Privilege Escalation (PE) Vulnerability","id":"CVE-2025-0120","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2025-04-11"},{"cvss_score":7.1,"headline":"Privilege escalation in GlobalProtect Agent for Linux and OSX","id":"CVE-2019-17436","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2019-10-16"},{"cvss_score":7,"headline":"GlobalProtect App: Improper Link Resolution Vulnerability Leads to Local Privilege Escalation","id":"CVE-2022-0017","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2022-02-10"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":null,"exploitation":null,"technical_impact":null},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2024-09-17","vendors":["Palo Alto Networks"]},"summary":"Attackers with local access can read cleartext passwords from diagnostic logs if specific logging and credential-saving settings are enabled.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2020-2004/"}
