An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2021-27850 exists.\n\nAffected packages and fixed versions:\n- org.apache.tapestry:tapestry-core (Maven): affected from 5.4.0; fixed in 5.6.3\n- org.apache.tapestry:tapestry-core (Maven): affected from 5.4.0; fixed in 5.6.3\n- org.apache.tapestry:tapestry-core (Maven): affected from 5.7.0; fixed in 5.7.1\n- org.apache.tapestry:tapestry-core (Maven): affected from 5.7.0; fixed in 5.7.1\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2021-27850/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2021-27850/index.md)","id":"CVE-2021-27850","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2021-27850/index.md","name":"CVE-2021-27850","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-mj8x-cpr8-x39h"],"analysis":{"component_type":"library","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["code_execution","data_read"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Java web framework","requires_auth":"none","summary":"Attackers can bypass a blacklist to retrieve HMAC keys and execute arbitrary code via deserialization in Apache Tapestry.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"deserialization"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"apache","cpe":[{"product":"tapestry","vendor":"apache"}],"cvss":{"score":9.8,"severity":"critical","source":"nvd","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-502","name":"Deserialization of Untrusted Data"},{"id":"CWE-200","name":"Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor"}],"description":"A critical unauthenticated remote code execution vulnerability was found all recent versions of Apache Tapestry. The affected versions include 5.4.5, 5.5.0, 5.6.2 and 5.7.0. The vulnerability I have found is a bypass of the fix for CVE-2019-0195. Recap: Before the fix of CVE-2019-0195 it was possible to download arbitrary class files from the classpath by providing a crafted asset file URL. An attacker was able to download the file `AppModule.class` by requesting the URL `http://localhost:8080/assets/something/services/AppModule.class` which contains a HMAC secret key. The fix for that bug was a blacklist filter that checks if the URL ends with `.class`, `.properties` or `.xml`. Bypass: Unfortunately, the blacklist solution can simply be bypassed by appending a `/` at the end of the URL: `http://localhost:8080/assets/something/services/AppModule.class/` The slash is stripped after the blacklist check and the file `AppModule.class` is loaded into the response. This class usually contains the HMAC secret key which is used to sign serialized Java objects. With the knowledge of that key an attacker can sign a Java gadget chain that leads to RCE (e.g. CommonsBeanUtils1 from ysoserial). Solution for this vulnerability: * For Apache Tapestry 5.4.0 to 5.6.1, upgrade to 5.6.2 or later. * For Apache Tapestry 5.7.0, upgrade to 5.7.1 or later.","ecosystems":["Maven"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":"2021-04-15","github_poc":4,"max_poc_stars":5,"metasploit":1,"nuclei":1,"refs":[{"date":"2021-06-25T13:55:41Z","kind":"github_poc","ref":"https://github.com/kahla-sec/CVE-2021-27850_POC","stars":5,"title":"A Proof of concept for CVE-2021-27850 affecting Apache Tapestry and leading to unauthencticated remote code execution."},{"date":"2021-06-26T14:16:00Z","kind":"github_poc","ref":"https://github.com/dorkerdevil/CVE-2021-27850_POC","stars":3,"title":"A Proof of concept for CVE-2021-27850 affecting Apache Tapestry and leading to unauthencticated remote code execution."},{"date":"2021-07-02T10:21:58Z","kind":"github_poc","ref":"https://github.com/Ovi3/CVE_2021_27850_POC","stars":2,"title":"Apache Tapestry CVE-2021-27850 PoC"},{"date":"2021-04-15","kind":"metasploit","ref":"auxiliary/gather/cve_2021_27850_apache_tapestry_hmac_key","stars":null,"title":"Apache Tapestry HMAC secret key leak"},{"date":"2022-07-07T01:42:44Z","kind":"github_poc","ref":"https://github.com/novysodope/CVE-2021-27850","stars":0,"title":"CVE-2021-27850 ysoserial"},{"date":null,"kind":"nuclei","ref":"http/cves/2021/CVE-2021-27850.yaml","stars":null,"title":"Apache Tapestry - Remote Code Execution"}],"tier":"weaponised"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"Bypass of the fix for CVE-2019-0195","id":"CVE-2021-27850","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":"Maven","product":null,"products":[],"type":"deserialization","year":"2021"},"n_packages":4,"n_references":3,"next":{"headline":"Local privilege escalation in GNU Guix via guix-daemon and '--keep-failed'","id":"CVE-2021-27851"},"packages":[{"ecosystem":"Maven","fixed":["5.6.3"],"introduced":["5.4.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"org.apache.tapestry:tapestry-core","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-mj8x-cpr8-x39h"},{"ecosystem":"Maven","fixed":["5.6.3"],"introduced":["5.4.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"org.apache.tapestry:tapestry-core","purl":"pkg:maven/org.apache.tapestry/tapestry-core","source":"GHSA-mj8x-cpr8-x39h"},{"ecosystem":"Maven","fixed":["5.7.1"],"introduced":["5.7.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"org.apache.tapestry:tapestry-core","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-mj8x-cpr8-x39h"},{"ecosystem":"Maven","fixed":["5.7.1"],"introduced":["5.7.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"org.apache.tapestry:tapestry-core","purl":"pkg:maven/org.apache.tapestry/tapestry-core","source":"GHSA-mj8x-cpr8-x39h"}],"prev":{"headline":"Denial of service in n/a","id":"CVE-2021-27847"},"products":["Apache Tapestry"],"published":"2021-04-15","related":[{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Apache Tapestry prior to version 4 (EOL) allows RCE though deserialization of untrusted input","id":"CVE-2022-46366","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2022-12-02"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Deserialization flaw in EOL Tapestry 4.","id":"CVE-2020-17531","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2020-12-08"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Deserialization of Untrusted Data in Apache Tapestry","id":"CVE-2019-0195","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2019-09-16"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Timing attack on HMAC signature comparison in Apache Tapestry","id":"CVE-2019-10071","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2019-09-16"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Apache Tapestry Unsafe Object Storage","id":"CVE-2014-1972","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2015-08-22"},{"cvss_score":7.5,"headline":"Apache Tapestry: Possible classpath file download through URL manipulation","id":"CVE-2026-61899","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-08-10"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"GitHub Advisory Database","prefix":"GHSA"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"BSD-3-Clause","name":"Metasploit"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"MIT","name":"Nuclei templates"},{"class":"open","licence":"CC0","name":"PoC-in-GitHub"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":null,"exploitation":null,"technical_impact":null},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2024-08-03","vendors":["Apache Software Foundation"]},"summary":"Attackers can bypass a blacklist to retrieve HMAC keys and execute arbitrary code via deserialization in Apache Tapestry.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2021-27850/"}
