## What is CVE-2022-22201?

CVE-2022-22201 is a high-severity denial of service vulnerability in Juniper Junos, published on 18 Oct 2022. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.

### Official description

An Improper Validation of Specified Index, Position, or Offset in Input vulnerability in the Packet Forwarding Engine (PFE) of Juniper Networks Junos OS allows an unauthenticated network-based attacker to cause a Denial of Service (DoS). On SRX5000 Series with SPC3, SRX4000 Series, and vSRX, when PowerMode IPsec is configured and a malformed ESP packet matching an established IPsec tunnel is received the PFE crashes. This issue affects Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX5000 Series with SPC3, SRX4000 Series, and vSRX: All versions prior to 19.4R2-S6, 19.4R3-S7; 20.1 versions prior to 20.1R3-S3; 20.2 versions prior to 20.2R3-S4; 20.3 versions prior to 20.3R3-S3; 20.4 versions prior to 20.4R3-S2; 21.1 versions prior to 21.1R3; 21.2 versions prior to 21.2R3; 21.3 versions prior to 21.3R1-S2, 21.3R2.

Weakness: CWE-20 (Improper Input Validation), CWE-1285 (Improper Validation of Specified Index, Position, or Offset in Input)

## Fix prompt for AI coding agents

```text
Check this codebase for CVE-2022-22201 and fix it if it is affected.
What it is: CVE-2022-22201 is a high-severity denial of service vulnerability in Juniper Junos, published on 18 Oct 2022. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.
Exploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2022-22201 in the wild and no public exploit code.
Affected product: Juniper Junos. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.
Task:
1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.
2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.
3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.
4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.
5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.
