It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, and only if a user opens a file or follows a link.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2022-23508 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected packages and fixed versions:\n- github.com/weaveworks/weave-gitops (Go): affected all versions; fixed in 0.12.0\n- github.com/weaveworks/weave-gitops (Go): affected all versions; fixed in 0.12.0\n- github.com/weaveworks/weave-gitops (Go): affected all versions; fixed in 0.12.0\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2022-23508/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2022-23508/index.md)","id":"CVE-2022-23508","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2022-23508/index.md","name":"CVE-2022-23508","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-wr3c-g326-486c","GO-2023-1377"],"analysis":{"component_type":"cloud_service","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["code_execution","privilege_escalation"],"network_reachable":"adjacent_or_local","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"GitOps developer platform","requires_auth":"none","summary":"Local attackers can inject malicious Kubernetes workloads via an unprotected local S3 bucket, leading to unauthorized cluster deployment.","user_interaction":"required","vuln_class":"missing_authorization"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"weave_gitops","vendor":"weave"}],"cvss":{"score":8.9,"severity":"high","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-552","name":"Files or Directories Accessible to External Parties"},{"id":"CWE-538","name":"Insertion of Sensitive Information into Externally-Accessible File or Directory"},{"id":"CWE-284","name":"Improper Access Control"}],"description":"Weave GitOps is a simple open source developer platform for people who want cloud native applications, without needing Kubernetes expertise.  A vulnerability in GitOps run could allow a local user or process to alter a Kubernetes cluster's resources. GitOps run has a local S3 bucket which it uses for synchronizing files that are later applied against a Kubernetes cluster. Its endpoint had no security controls to block unauthorized access, therefore allowing local users (and processes) on the same machine to see and alter the bucket content. By leveraging this vulnerability, an attacker could pick a workload of their choosing and inject it into the S3 bucket, which resulted in the successful deployment in the target cluster, without the need to provide any credentials to either the S3 bucket nor the target Kubernetes cluster. There are no known workarounds for this issue, please upgrade. This vulnerability has been fixed by commits 75268c4 and 966823b. Users should upgrade to Weave GitOps version \u003e= v0.12.0 released on 08/12/2022.\n\n### Workarounds\nThere is no workaround for this vulnerability.\n\n### References\nDisclosed by Paulo Gomes, Senior Software Engineer, Weaveworks.\n\n### For more information\nIf you have any questions or comments about this advisory:\n\n- Open an issue in [Weave GitOps repository](https://github.com/weaveworks/weave-gitops)\n- Email us at [support@weave.works](mailto:support@weave.works)","ecosystems":["Go"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"GitOps Run allows for Kubernetes workload injection","id":"CVE-2022-23508","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":"Go","product":null,"products":[],"type":"missing_authorization","year":"2022"},"n_packages":3,"n_references":3,"next":{"headline":"Weave Gitops Run vulnerable to insecure communication","id":"CVE-2022-23509"},"packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["0.12.0"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/weaveworks/weave-gitops","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-wr3c-g326-486c"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["0.12.0"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/weaveworks/weave-gitops","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/weaveworks/weave-gitops","source":"GHSA-wr3c-g326-486c"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["0.12.0"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/weaveworks/weave-gitops","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/weaveworks/weave-gitops","source":"GO-2023-1377"}],"prev":{"headline":"Light client verification not taking into account chain ID","id":"CVE-2022-23507"},"products":["weave-gitops"],"published":"2023-01-09","related":[{"cvss_score":9,"headline":"Weave GitOps leaked cluster credentials into logs on connection errors","id":"CVE-2022-31098","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2022-06-27"},{"cvss_score":7.4,"headline":"Weave Gitops Run vulnerable to insecure communication","id":"CVE-2022-23509","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2023-01-09"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"GitHub Advisory Database","prefix":"GHSA"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"Go Vulnerability Database","prefix":"GO"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"none","technical_impact":"total"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2025-03-10","vendors":["weaveworks"]},"summary":"Local attackers can inject malicious Kubernetes workloads via an unprotected local S3 bucket, leading to unauthorized cluster deployment.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2022-23508/"}
