An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2022-24778 exists.\n\nAffected packages and fixed versions:\n- github.com/containerd/imgcrypt (Go): affected all versions; fixed in 1.1.4\n- github.com/containerd/imgcrypt (Go): affected all versions; fixed in 1.1.4\n- github.com/containerd/imgcrypt (Go): affected all versions; fixed in 1.1.4\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2022-24778/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2022-24778/index.md)","id":"CVE-2022-24778","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2022-24778/index.md","name":"CVE-2022-24778","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-8v99-48m9-c8pm","GO-2021-0412","UBUNTU-CVE-2022-24778"],"analysis":{"component_type":"container_or_infrastructure","fix_type":"patch","impacts":["security_bypass"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"containerd imgcrypt library","requires_auth":"none","summary":"Attackers can bypass authorization checks to run previously decrypted encrypted container images on systems with multi-architecture manifests.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"missing_authorization"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"fedora","vendor":"fedoraproject"},{"product":"imgcrypt","vendor":"linuxfoundation"}],"cvss":{"score":7.5,"severity":"high","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-863","name":"Incorrect Authorization"}],"description":"The imgcrypt library provides API exensions for containerd to support encrypted container images and implements the ctd-decoder command line tool for use by containerd to decrypt encrypted container images. The imgcrypt function `CheckAuthorization` is supposed to check whether the current used is authorized to access an encrypted image and prevent the user from running an image that another user previously decrypted on the same system. In versions prior to 1.1.4, a failure occurs when an image with a ManifestList is used and the architecture of the local host is not the first one in the ManifestList. Only the first architecture in the list was tested, which may not have its layers available locally since it could not be run on the host architecture. Therefore, the verdict on unavailable layers was that the image could be run anticipating that image run failure would occur later due to the layers not being available. However, this verdict to allow the image to run enabled other architectures in the ManifestList to run an image without providing keys if that image had previously been decrypted. A patch has been applied to imgcrypt 1.1.4. Workarounds may include usage of different namespaces for each remote user.","ecosystems":["Go"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"weaponised"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"Incorrect Authorization in imgcrypt","id":"CVE-2022-24778","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":"Go","product":"fedoraproject:fedora","products":["fedoraproject:fedora"],"type":"missing_authorization","year":"2022"},"n_packages":3,"n_references":7,"next":{"headline":"Code Injection in Combodo iTop","id":"CVE-2022-24780"},"packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["1.1.4"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/containerd/imgcrypt","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-8v99-48m9-c8pm"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["1.1.4"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/containerd/imgcrypt","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containerd/imgcrypt","source":"GHSA-8v99-48m9-c8pm"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["1.1.4"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/containerd/imgcrypt","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/containerd/imgcrypt","source":"GO-2021-0412"}],"prev":{"headline":"Denial of Service via reachable assertion in grpc-swift","id":"CVE-2022-24777"},"products":["imgcrypt"],"published":"2022-03-25","related":[{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"PHP-CGI OS Command Injection","id":"CVE-2024-4577","kev_date_added":"2024-06-12","published":"2024-06-09"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Grafana Authentication Bypass","id":"CVE-2021-39226","kev_date_added":"2022-08-25","published":"2021-10-05"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"VMware ESXi and Horizon DaaS OpenSLP Heap-Based Buffer Overflow","id":"CVE-2019-5544","kev_date_added":"2021-11-03","published":"2019-12-06"},{"cvss_score":9.6,"headline":"Google Chromium V8 Type Confusion","id":"CVE-2024-4947","kev_date_added":"2024-05-20","published":"2024-05-15"},{"cvss_score":9.6,"headline":"Google Chromium Visuals Use-After-Free","id":"CVE-2024-4671","kev_date_added":"2024-05-13","published":"2024-05-09"},{"cvss_score":9.6,"headline":"Google Chromium Mojo Insufficient Data Validation","id":"CVE-2022-3075","kev_date_added":"2022-09-08","published":"2022-09-26"},{"cvss_score":9.6,"headline":"Google Chromium Indexed DB API Use-After-Free","id":"CVE-2021-30633","kev_date_added":"2021-11-03","published":"2021-10-08"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"GitHub Advisory Database","prefix":"GHSA"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"Go Vulnerability Database","prefix":"GO"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"yes","exploitation":"poc","technical_impact":"partial"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2025-04-22","vendors":["containerd"]},"summary":"Attackers can bypass authorization checks to run previously decrypted encrypted container images on systems with multi-architecture manifests.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2022-24778/"}
