An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2022-3252 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected packages and fixed versions:\n- github.com/apple/swift-nio-extras (SwiftURL): affected all versions; fixed in 1.9.2\n- github.com/apple/swift-nio-extras (SwiftURL): affected all versions; fixed in 1.9.2\n- github.com/apple/swift-nio-extras (SwiftURL): affected from 1.10.0; fixed in 1.10.3\n- github.com/apple/swift-nio-extras (SwiftURL): affected from 1.10.0; fixed in 1.10.3\n- github.com/apple/swift-nio-extras (SwiftURL): affected from 1.11.0; fixed in 1.14.0\n- github.com/apple/swift-nio-extras (SwiftURL): affected from 1.11.0; fixed in 1.14.0\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2022-3252/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2022-3252/index.md)","id":"CVE-2022-3252","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2022-3252/index.md","name":"CVE-2022-3252","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-773g-x274-8qmf"],"analysis":{"component_type":"library","fix_type":"patch","impacts":["denial_of_service"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"SwiftNIO Extras","requires_auth":"none","summary":"Attackers can cause a denial of service in SwiftNIO Extras by sending compressed HTTP messages with trailing junk data, triggering an infinite decompression loop.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"denial_of_service"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"Swift","cpe":[{"product":"swift-nio-extras","vendor":"apple"}],"cvss":{"score":7.5,"severity":"high","source":"nvd","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-835","name":"Loop with Unreachable Exit Condition"},{"id":"CWE-606","name":"Unchecked Input for Loop Condition"}],"description":"Improper detection of complete HTTP body decompression SwiftNIO Extras provides a pair of helpers for transparently decompressing received HTTP request or response bodies. These two objects (HTTPRequestDecompressor and HTTPResponseDecompressor) both failed to detect when the decompressed body was considered complete. If trailing junk data was appended to the HTTP message body, the code would repeatedly attempt to decompress this data and fail. This would lead to an infinite loop making no forward progress, leading to livelock of the system and denial-of-service. This issue can be triggered by any attacker capable of sending a compressed HTTP message. Most commonly this is HTTP servers, as compressed HTTP messages cannot be negotiated for HTTP requests, but it is possible that users have configured decompression for HTTP requests as well. The attack is low effort, and likely to be reached without requiring any privilege or system access. The impact on availability is high: the process immediately becomes unavailable but does not immediately crash, meaning that it is possible for the process to remain in this state until an administrator intervenes or an automated circuit breaker fires. If left unchecked this issue will very slowly exhaust memory resources due to repeated buffer allocation, but the buffers are not written to and so it is possible that the processes will not terminate for quite some time. This risk can be mitigated by removing transparent HTTP message decompression. The issue is fixed by correctly detecting the termination of the compressed body as reported by zlib and refusing to decompress further data. The issue was found by Vojtech Rylko (https://github.com/vojtarylko) and reported publicly on GitHub.","ecosystems":["SwiftURL"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"SwiftNIO Extras vulnerable to improper detection of complete HTTP body decompression","id":"CVE-2022-3252","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":"SwiftURL","product":null,"products":[],"type":"denial_of_service","year":"2022"},"n_packages":6,"n_references":1,"next":{"headline":"AWP Classifieds Plugin \u003c 4.3 - Unauthenticated SQLi","id":"CVE-2022-3254"},"packages":[{"ecosystem":"SwiftURL","fixed":["1.9.2"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/apple/swift-nio-extras","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-773g-x274-8qmf"},{"ecosystem":"SwiftURL","fixed":["1.9.2"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/apple/swift-nio-extras","purl":"pkg:swift/github.com/apple/swift-nio-extras","source":"GHSA-773g-x274-8qmf"},{"ecosystem":"SwiftURL","fixed":["1.10.3"],"introduced":["1.10.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/apple/swift-nio-extras","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-773g-x274-8qmf"},{"ecosystem":"SwiftURL","fixed":["1.10.3"],"introduced":["1.10.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/apple/swift-nio-extras","purl":"pkg:swift/github.com/apple/swift-nio-extras","source":"GHSA-773g-x274-8qmf"},{"ecosystem":"SwiftURL","fixed":["1.14.0"],"introduced":["1.11.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/apple/swift-nio-extras","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-773g-x274-8qmf"},{"ecosystem":"SwiftURL","fixed":["1.14.0"],"introduced":["1.11.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/apple/swift-nio-extras","purl":"pkg:swift/github.com/apple/swift-nio-extras","source":"GHSA-773g-x274-8qmf"}],"prev":{"headline":"Sensitive Cookie in HTTPS Session Without 'Secure' Attribute in ikus060/minarca","id":"CVE-2022-3251"},"products":["SwiftNIO Extras"],"published":"2022-09-21","related":[],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"GitHub Advisory Database","prefix":"GHSA"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":null,"exploitation":null,"technical_impact":null},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2024-08-03","vendors":["Swift Project"]},"summary":"Attackers can cause a denial of service in SwiftNIO Extras by sending compressed HTTP messages with trailing junk data, triggering an infinite decompression loop.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2022-3252/"}
