An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2022-41923 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: grails-spring-security-core. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2022-41923/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2022-41923/index.md)","id":"CVE-2022-41923","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2022-41923/index.md","name":"CVE-2022-41923","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-frqg-vvxg-jqqh"],"analysis":{"component_type":"library","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["privilege_escalation"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Grails Spring Security plugin","requires_auth":"none","summary":"Attackers can access restricted endpoints by meeting authorization requirements of different endpoints, leading to privilege escalation in Grails applications.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"privilege_escalation"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"spring_security_core","vendor":"grails"}],"cvss":{"score":9.1,"severity":"critical","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-863","name":"Incorrect Authorization"},{"id":"CWE-269","name":"Improper Privilege Management"}],"description":"Grails Spring Security Core plugin is vulnerable to privilege escalation. The vulnerability allows an attacker access to one endpoint (i.e. the targeted endpoint) using the authorization requirements of a different endpoint (i.e. the donor endpoint). In some Grails framework applications, access to the targeted endpoint will be granted based on meeting the authorization requirements of the donor endpoint, which can result in a privilege escalation attack. This vulnerability has been patched in grails-spring-security-core versions 3.3.2, 4.0.5 and 5.1.1. Impacted Applications: Grails Spring Security Core plugin versions: 1.x 2.x \u003e=3.0.0 \u003c3.3.2 \u003e=4.0.0 \u003c4.0.5 \u003e=5.0.0 \u003c5.1.1 We strongly suggest that all Grails framework applications using the Grails Spring Security Core plugin be updated to a patched release of the plugin. Workarounds: Users should create a subclass extending one of the following classes from the `grails.plugin.springsecurity.web.access.intercept` package, depending on their security configuration: * `AnnotationFilterInvocationDefinition` * `InterceptUrlMapFilterInvocationDefinition` * `RequestmapFilterInvocationDefinition` In each case, the subclass should override the `calculateUri` method like so: ``` @Override protected String calculateUri(HttpServletRequest request) { UrlPathHelper.defaultInstance.getRequestUri(request) } ``` This should be considered a temporary measure, as the patched versions of grails-spring-security-core deprecates the `calculateUri` method. Once upgraded to a patched version of the plugin, this workaround is no longer needed. The workaround is especially important for version 2.x, as no patch is available version 2.x of the GSSC plugin.","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":"2022-11-22","github_poc":1,"max_poc_stars":7,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[{"date":"2022-11-22T17:24:51Z","kind":"github_poc","ref":"https://github.com/grails/GSSC-CVE-2022-41923","stars":7,"title":null}],"tier":"poc_unverified"},"has_fix":false,"headline":"Grails Spring Security Core plugin vulnerable to privilege escalation","id":"CVE-2022-41923","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":null,"products":[],"type":"privilege_escalation","year":"2022"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":3,"next":{"headline":"Tailscale Windows daemon is vulnerable to RCE via CSRF","id":"CVE-2022-41924"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"Prevent RCE when deserializing untrusted user input","id":"CVE-2022-41922"},"products":["grails-spring-security-core"],"published":"2022-11-23","related":[],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"},{"class":"open","licence":"CC0","name":"PoC-in-GitHub"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"yes","exploitation":"none","technical_impact":"total"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2025-04-23","vendors":["grails"]},"summary":"Attackers can access restricted endpoints by meeting authorization requirements of different endpoints, leading to privilege escalation in Grails applications.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2022-41923/"}
