## What is CVE-2022-45061?

CVE-2022-45061 is a high-severity denial of service vulnerability in Fedoraproject Fedora, published on 9 Nov 2022. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.

### Official description

An issue was discovered in Python before 3.11.1. An unnecessary quadratic algorithm exists in one path when processing some inputs to the IDNA (RFC 3490) decoder, such that a crafted, unreasonably long name being presented to the decoder could lead to a CPU denial of service. Hostnames are often supplied by remote servers that could be controlled by a malicious actor; in such a scenario, they could trigger excessive CPU consumption on the client attempting to make use of an attacker-supplied supposed hostname. For example, the attack payload could be placed in the Location header of an HTTP response with status code 302. A fix is planned in 3.11.1, 3.10.9, 3.9.16, 3.8.16, and 3.7.16.

Weakness: CWE-407 (Inefficient Algorithmic Complexity)

What it is: CVE-2022-45061 is a high-severity denial of service vulnerability in Fedoraproject Fedora, published on 9 Nov 2022. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.
Exploitation: It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2022-45061 exists.

Affected packages and fixed versions:
- libpython (Bitnami): affected all versions; fixed in 3.7.16, 3.10.9, 3.11.1, 3.8.16, 3.9.16
- python (Bitnami): affected all versions; fixed in 3.7.16, 3.10.9, 3.11.1, 3.8.16, 3.9.16
- python-min (Bitnami): affected all versions; fixed in 3.7.16, 3.10.9, 3.11.1, 3.8.16, 3.9.16

Task:
1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.
2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.
3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.
4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.
5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.
