An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2023-22482 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected packages and fixed versions:\n- github.com/argoproj/argo-cd (Go): affected from 1.8.2; no fix listed\n- github.com/argoproj/argo-cd (Go): affected from 1.8.2; fixed in 2.3.14\n- github.com/argoproj/argo-cd (Go): affected from 1.8.2; fixed in 2.3.14\n- github.com/argoproj/argo-cd (Go): affected from 2.4.0; fixed in 2.4.20\n- github.com/argoproj/argo-cd (Go): affected from 2.4.0; fixed in 2.4.20\n- github.com/argoproj/argo-cd (Go): affected from 2.5.0; fixed in 2.5.8\n- github.com/argoproj/argo-cd (Go): affected from 2.5.0; fixed in 2.5.8\n- github.com/argoproj/argo-cd (Go): affected from 2.6.0-rc1; fixed in 2.6.0-rc5\n- github.com/argoproj/argo-cd (Go): affected from 2.6.0-rc1; fixed in 2.6.0-rc5\n- github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2 (Go): affected all versions; fixed in 2.3.14, 2.4.20, 2.5.8, 2.6.0-rc5\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2023-22482/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2023-22482/index.md)","id":"CVE-2023-22482","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2023-22482/index.md","name":"CVE-2023-22482","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-q9hr-j4rf-8fjc","GO-2023-1520"],"analysis":{"component_type":"server_software","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["privilege_escalation","account_takeover"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Kubernetes GitOps tool","requires_auth":"none","summary":"Argo CD fails to validate JWT audience claims, allowing attackers to use tokens intended for other services to gain unauthorized access and privileges.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"missing_authorization"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"argo_cd","vendor":"argoproj"}],"cvss":{"score":9.1,"severity":"critical","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-863","name":"Incorrect Authorization"}],"description":"Argo CD is a declarative, GitOps continuous delivery tool for Kubernetes. Versions of Argo CD starting with v1.8.2 and prior to 2.3.13, 2.4.19, 2.5.6, and 2.6.0-rc-3  are vulnerable to an improper authorization bug causing the API to accept certain invalid tokens. OIDC providers include an `aud` (audience) claim in signed tokens. The value of that claim specifies the intended audience(s) of the token (i.e. the service or services which are meant to accept the token). Argo CD _does_ validate that the token was signed by Argo CD's configured OIDC provider. But Argo CD _does not_ validate the audience claim, so it will accept tokens that are not intended for Argo CD. If Argo CD's configured OIDC provider also serves other audiences (for example, a file storage service), then Argo CD will accept a token intended for one of those other audiences. Argo CD will grant the user privileges based on the token's `groups` claim, even though those groups were not intended to be used by Argo CD. This bug also increases the impact of a stolen token. If an attacker steals a valid token for a different audience, they can use it to access Argo CD. A patch for this vulnerability has been released in versions 2.6.0-rc3, 2.5.6, 2.4.19, and 2.3.13. There are no workarounds.","ecosystems":["Go"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"JWT audience claim is not verified","id":"CVE-2023-22482","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":"Go","product":"argoproj:argo_cd","products":["argoproj:argo_cd"],"type":"missing_authorization","year":"2023"},"n_packages":10,"n_references":1,"next":{"headline":"cmark-gfm Quadratic complexity bugs may lead to a denial of service","id":"CVE-2023-22483"},"packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":[],"introduced":["1.8.2"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/argoproj/argo-cd","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/argoproj/argo-cd","source":"GO-2023-1520"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["2.3.14"],"introduced":["1.8.2"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/argoproj/argo-cd","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-q9hr-j4rf-8fjc"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["2.3.14"],"introduced":["1.8.2"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/argoproj/argo-cd","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/argoproj/argo-cd","source":"GHSA-q9hr-j4rf-8fjc"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["2.4.20"],"introduced":["2.4.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/argoproj/argo-cd","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-q9hr-j4rf-8fjc"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["2.4.20"],"introduced":["2.4.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/argoproj/argo-cd","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/argoproj/argo-cd","source":"GHSA-q9hr-j4rf-8fjc"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["2.5.8"],"introduced":["2.5.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/argoproj/argo-cd","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-q9hr-j4rf-8fjc"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["2.5.8"],"introduced":["2.5.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/argoproj/argo-cd","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/argoproj/argo-cd","source":"GHSA-q9hr-j4rf-8fjc"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["2.6.0-rc5"],"introduced":["2.6.0-rc1"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/argoproj/argo-cd","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-q9hr-j4rf-8fjc"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["2.6.0-rc5"],"introduced":["2.6.0-rc1"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/argoproj/argo-cd","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/argoproj/argo-cd","source":"GHSA-q9hr-j4rf-8fjc"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["2.3.14","2.4.20","2.5.8","2.6.0-rc5"],"introduced":["0","2.4.0","2.5.0","2.6.0-rc1"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2","source":"GO-2023-1520"}],"prev":{"headline":"Sensitive information exposure in the logs of greader API in FreshRSS","id":"CVE-2023-22481"},"products":["argo-cd"],"published":"2023-01-25","related":[{"cvss_score":10,"headline":"Argo CD: Project API Token Exposes Repository Credentials","id":"CVE-2025-55190","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2025-09-04"},{"cvss_score":10,"headline":"Argo CD will blindly trust JWT claims if anonymous access is enabled","id":"CVE-2022-29165","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2022-05-20"},{"cvss_score":9.9,"headline":"Cluster secret might leak in cluster details page in Argo CD","id":"CVE-2023-40029","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2023-09-07"},{"cvss_score":9.9,"headline":"Improper access control allows admin privilege escalation in Argo CD","id":"CVE-2022-24768","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2022-03-23"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Argo CD vulnerable to Bypassing of Brute Force Protection via Application Crash and In-Memory Data Loss","id":"CVE-2024-21652","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2024-03-18"},{"cvss_score":9.6,"headline":"ArgoCD ServerSideDiff is vulnerable to Kubernetes Secret Extraction","id":"CVE-2026-42880","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-05-07"},{"cvss_score":9.1,"headline":"Argo CD allows cross-site scripting on repositories page","id":"CVE-2025-47933","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2025-05-29"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"GitHub Advisory Database","prefix":"GHSA"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"Go Vulnerability Database","prefix":"GO"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"none","technical_impact":"total"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2025-03-11","vendors":["argoproj"]},"summary":"Argo CD fails to validate JWT audience claims, allowing attackers to use tokens intended for other services to gain unauthorized access and privileges.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2023-22482/"}
