## What is CVE-2023-28642?

CVE-2023-28642 is a medium-severity vulnerability in opencontainers runc, published on 29 Mar 2023. It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, and only if a user opens a file or follows a link.

### Official description

runc is a CLI tool for spawning and running containers according to the OCI specification. It was found that AppArmor can be bypassed when `/proc` inside the container is symlinked with a specific mount configuration. This issue has been fixed in runc version 1.1.5, by prohibiting symlinked `/proc`. See PR #3785 for details. users are advised to upgrade. Users unable to upgrade should avoid using an untrusted container image.

Weakness: CWE-59 (Improper Link Resolution Before File Access), CWE-281 (Improper Preservation of Permissions)

Check this codebase for CVE-2023-28642 and fix it if it is affected.

What it is: CVE-2023-28642 is a medium-severity vulnerability in opencontainers runc, published on 29 Mar 2023. It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, and only if a user opens a file or follows a link.
Exploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2023-28642 in the wild and no public exploit code.

Affected packages and fixed versions:
- github.com/opencontainers/runc (Go): affected all versions; fixed in 1.1.5
- github.com/opencontainers/runc (Go): affected all versions; fixed in 1.1.5
- github.com/opencontainers/runc (Go): affected all versions; fixed in 1.1.5

Task:
1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.
2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.
3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.
4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.
5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.
