An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2023-28857 exists.\n\nAffected packages and fixed versions:\n- org.apereo.cas:cas-server-support-x509-core (Maven): affected from 6.5.0; fixed in 6.6.6\n- org.apereo.cas:cas-server-support-x509-core (Maven): affected from 6.5.0; fixed in 6.6.6\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2023-28857/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2023-28857/index.md)","id":"CVE-2023-28857","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2023-28857/index.md","name":"CVE-2023-28857","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-p78h-m8pv-g9gm"],"analysis":{"component_type":"server_software","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["data_read"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":true,"product_category":"Apereo CAS SSO","requires_auth":"none","summary":"An unauthenticated attacker can leak the LDAP bind password by providing a malicious X509 certificate with a crafted CRL distribution point.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"information_disclosure"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"central_authentication_service","vendor":"apereo"}],"cvss":{"score":4,"severity":"medium","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:N/A:N","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-522","name":"Insufficiently Protected Credentials"},{"id":"CWE-200","name":"Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor"}],"description":"Apereo CAS is an open source multilingual single sign-on solution for the web. Apereo CAS can be configured to use authentication based on client X509 certificates. These certificates can be provided via TLS handshake or a special HTTP header, such as “ssl_client_cert”. When checking the validity of the provided client certificate, X509CredentialsAuthenticationHandler performs check that this certificate is not revoked. To do so, it fetches URLs provided in the “CRL Distribution Points” extension of the certificate, which are taken from the certificate itself and therefore can be controlled by a malicious user. If the CAS server is configured to use an LDAP server for x509 authentication with a password, for example by setting a “cas.authn.x509.ldap.ldap-url” and “cas.authn.x509.ldap.bind-credential” properties, X509CredentialsAuthenticationHandler fetches revocation URLs from the certificate, which can be LDAP urls. When making requests to this LDAP urls, Apereo CAS uses the same password as for initially configured LDAP server, which can lead to a password leak. An unauthenticated user can leak the password used to LDAP connection configured on server. This issue has been addressed in version 6.6.6. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.","ecosystems":["Maven"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"weaponised"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"LDAP password leak in Apereo CAS - GHSL-2023-009","id":"CVE-2023-28857","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":"Maven","product":null,"products":[],"type":"information_disclosure","year":"2023"},"n_packages":2,"n_references":3,"next":{"headline":"redis-py Race Condition vulnerability","id":"CVE-2023-28858"},"packages":[{"ecosystem":"Maven","fixed":["6.6.6"],"introduced":["6.5.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"org.apereo.cas:cas-server-support-x509-core","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-p78h-m8pv-g9gm"},{"ecosystem":"Maven","fixed":["6.6.6"],"introduced":["6.5.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"org.apereo.cas:cas-server-support-x509-core","purl":"pkg:maven/org.apereo.cas/cas-server-support-x509-core","source":"GHSA-p78h-m8pv-g9gm"}],"prev":{"headline":"`HINCRBYFLOAT` can be used to crash a redis-server process","id":"CVE-2023-28856"},"products":["CAS"],"published":"2023-06-27","related":[{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"MFA bypass in Apereo CAS","id":"CVE-2023-4612","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2023-11-09"},{"cvss_score":9.1,"headline":"CAS \u003c= 1.0.0 - Unauthenticated SSRF","id":"CVE-2024-4399","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2024-05-23"},{"cvss_score":8.1,"headline":"Use of Insufficiently Random Values in Apereo CAS","id":"CVE-2019-10754","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2019-09-23"},{"cvss_score":7.5,"headline":"Improper Authentication in Apereo CAS","id":"CVE-2020-27178","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2020-10-16"},{"cvss_score":7.5,"headline":"Auth bypass in n/a","id":"CVE-2015-1169","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2015-02-10"},{"cvss_score":6.3,"headline":"Apereo CAS login session expiration","id":"CVE-2024-11208","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2024-11-14"},{"cvss_score":6.1,"headline":"Cross-site Scripting in Apereo CAS","id":"CVE-2021-42567","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2021-12-07"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"GitHub Advisory Database","prefix":"GHSA"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"poc","technical_impact":"partial"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2024-11-27","vendors":["Apereo"]},"summary":"An unauthenticated attacker can leak the LDAP bind password by providing a malicious X509 certificate with a crafted CRL distribution point.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2023-28857/"}
