## What is CVE-2023-39320?

CVE-2023-39320 is a critical code injection vulnerability in Golang Go, published on 8 Sep 2023. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.

### Official description

The go.mod toolchain directive, introduced in Go 1.21, can be leveraged to execute scripts and binaries relative to the root of the module when the "go" command was executed within the module. This applies to modules downloaded using the "go" command from the module proxy, as well as modules downloaded directly using VCS software.

Weakness: CWE-94 (Improper Control of Generation of Code)

## Fix prompt for AI coding agents

```text
Check this codebase for CVE-2023-39320 and fix it if it is affected.
What it is: CVE-2023-39320 is a critical code injection vulnerability in Golang Go, published on 8 Sep 2023. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.
Exploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2023-39320 in the wild and no public exploit code.
Affected packages and fixed versions:
- golang (Bitnami): affected from 1.21.0; fixed in 1.21.1
- toolchain (Go): affected from 1.21.0-0; fixed in 1.21.1
Task:
1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.
2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.
3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.
4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.
5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.
