It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, and only if a user opens a file or follows a link.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2023-44392 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: garden-io garden. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2023-44392/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2023-44392/index.md)","id":"CVE-2023-44392","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2023-44392/index.md","name":"CVE-2023-44392","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-hm75-6vc9-8rpr"],"analysis":{"component_type":"developer_tool","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["code_execution"],"network_reachable":"adjacent_or_local","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Kubernetes development tool","requires_auth":"low_privilege","summary":"An attacker with Kubernetes cluster access can achieve remote code execution on a developer's machine by injecting malicious serialized objects into cached ConfigMaps.","user_interaction":"required","vuln_class":"deserialization"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"garden","vendor":"garden"}],"cvss":{"score":8.3,"severity":"high","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-94","name":"Improper Control of Generation of Code"},{"id":"CWE-502","name":"Deserialization of Untrusted Data"}],"description":"Garden provides automation for Kubernetes development and testing. Prior tov ersions 0.13.17 and 0.12.65, Garden has a dependency on the cryo library, which is vulnerable to code injection due to an insecure implementation of deserialization. Garden stores serialized objects using cryo in the Kubernetes `ConfigMap` resources prefixed with `test-result` and `run-result` to cache Garden test and run results. These `ConfigMaps` are stored either in the `garden-system` namespace or the configured user namespace. When a user invokes the command `garden test` or `garden run` objects stored in the `ConfigMap` are retrieved and deserialized. This can be used by an attacker with access to the Kubernetes cluster to store malicious objects in the `ConfigMap`, which can trigger a remote code execution on the users machine when cryo deserializes the object. In order to exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must have access to the Kubernetes cluster used to deploy garden remote environments. Further, a user must actively invoke either a `garden test` or `garden run` which has previously cached results. The issue has been patched in Garden versions `0.13.17` (Bonsai) and `0.12.65` (Acorn). Only Garden versions prior to these are vulnerable. No known workarounds are available.","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":false,"headline":"Arbitrary code execution vulnerability when using shared Kubernetes cluster","id":"CVE-2023-44392","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":null,"products":[],"type":"deserialization","year":"2023"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":2,"next":{"headline":"Piwigo Reflected XSS vulnerability","id":"CVE-2023-44393"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"Prevent unauthorized access to summary details in Discourse","id":"CVE-2023-44391"},"products":["garden"],"published":"2023-10-09","related":[{"cvss_score":8.1,"headline":"Missing authentication in Garden","id":"CVE-2022-24829","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2022-04-11"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"none","technical_impact":"total"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2024-09-18","vendors":["garden-io"]},"summary":"An attacker with Kubernetes cluster access can achieve remote code execution on a developer's machine by injecting malicious serialized objects into cached ConfigMaps.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2023-44392/"}
