## What is CVE-2023-53021?

CVE-2023-53021 is a high-severity use after free vulnerability in Linux kernel, published on 27 Mar 2025. It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.

### Official description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net/sched: sch_taprio: fix possible use-after-free

syzbot reported a nasty crash [1] in net_tx_action() which
made little sense until we got a repro.

This repro installs a taprio qdisc, but providing an
invalid TCA_RATE attribute.

qdisc_create() has to destroy the just initialized
taprio qdisc, and taprio_destroy() is called.

However, the hrtimer used by taprio had already fired,
therefore advance_sched() called __netif_schedule().

Then net_tx_action was trying to use a destroyed qdisc.

We can not undo the __netif_schedule(), so we must wait
until one cpu serviced the qdisc before we can proceed.

Many thanks to Alexander Potapenko for his help.

## Fix prompt for AI coding agents

```text
Check this codebase for CVE-2023-53021 and fix it if it is affected.
What it is: CVE-2023-53021 is a high-severity use after free vulnerability in Linux kernel, published on 27 Mar 2025. It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.
Exploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2023-53021 in the wild and no public exploit code.
Affected product: Linux kernel. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.
Task:
1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.
2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.
3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.
4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.
5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.
