## What is CVE-2023-53597?

CVE-2023-53597 is a high-severity denial of service vulnerability in Linux kernel, published on 4 Oct 2025. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.

### Official description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

cifs: fix mid leak during reconnection after timeout threshold

When the number of responses with status of STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT
exceeds a specified threshold (NUM_STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT), we reconnect
the connection. But we do not return the mid, or the credits
returned for the mid, or reduce the number of in-flight requests.

This bug could result in the server->in_flight count to go bad,
and also cause a leak in the mids.

This change moves the check to a few lines below where the
response is decrypted, even of the response is read from the
transform header. This way, the code for returning the mids
can be reused.

Also, the cifs_reconnect was reconnecting just the transport
connection before. In case of multi-channel, this may not be
what we want to do after several timeouts. Changed that to
reconnect the session and the tree too.

Also renamed NUM_STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT to a more appropriate name
MAX_STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT.

Weakness: CWE-401 (Missing Release of Memory after Effective Lifetime)

## Fix prompt for AI coding agents

```text
Check this codebase for CVE-2023-53597 and fix it if it is affected.
What it is: CVE-2023-53597 is a high-severity denial of service vulnerability in Linux kernel, published on 4 Oct 2025. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.
Exploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2023-53597 in the wild and no public exploit code.
Affected product: Linux kernel. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.
Task:
1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.
2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.
3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.
4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.
5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.
