What is CVE-2024-22201?

CVE-2024-22201 is a high-severity denial of service vulnerability in Debian Debian Linux, published on 26 Feb 2024. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.

Official description

Jetty is a Java based web server and servlet engine. An HTTP/2 SSL connection that is established and TCP congested will be leaked when it times out. An attacker can cause many connections to end up in this state, and the server may run out of file descriptors, eventually causing the server to stop accepting new connections from valid clients. The vulnerability is patched in 9.4.54, 10.0.20, 11.0.20, and 12.0.6.

How do I fix CVE-2024-22201?

Upgrade org.eclipse.jetty.http2:http2-common to a fixed version for your release line: 10.0.20, 11.0.20 or 9.4.54.

Upgrade, then put limits on request size, rate and nesting depth so one client cannot exhaust the service. More about Denial of service.

Is CVE-2024-22201 being exploited?

It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2024-22201 exists.
