An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, and only if a user opens a file or follows a link.\nExploitation: It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2024-23633 exists.\n\nAffected packages and fixed versions:\n- label-studio (PyPI): affected all versions; fixed in 1.10.1\n- label-studio (PyPI): affected all versions; fixed in 1.10.1\n- label-studio (PyPI): affected all versions; fixed in 1.10.1\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2024-23633/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2024-23633/index.md)","id":"CVE-2024-23633","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2024-23633/index.md","name":"CVE-2024-23633","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-fq23-g58m-799r","PYSEC-2024-128"],"analysis":{"component_type":"web_application","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["code_execution","privilege_escalation"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Data labeling tool","requires_auth":"none","summary":"Attackers can execute arbitrary JavaScript via malicious HTML imports, potentially escalating privileges to administrator.","user_interaction":"required","vuln_class":"xss"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"label_studio","vendor":"humansignal"}],"cvss":{"score":4.7,"severity":"medium","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:N/A:N","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-79","name":"Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation"}],"description":"Label Studio, an open source data labeling tool had a remote import feature allowed users to import data from a remote web source, that was downloaded and could be viewed on the website. Prior to version 1.10.1, this feature could had been abused to download a HTML file that executed malicious JavaScript code in the context of the Label Studio website. Executing arbitrary JavaScript could result in an attacker performing malicious actions on Label Studio users if they visit the crafted avatar image. For an example, an attacker can craft a JavaScript payload that adds a new Django Super Administrator user if a Django administrator visits the image.\n\n`data_import/uploader.py` lines 125C5 through 146 showed that if a URL passed the server side request forgery verification checks, the contents of the file would be downloaded using the filename in the URL. The downloaded file path could then be retrieved by sending a request to `/api/projects/{project_id}/file-uploads?ids=[{download_id}]` where `{project_id}` was the ID of the project and `{download_id}` was the ID of the downloaded file. Once the downloaded file path was retrieved by the previous API endpoint, `data_import/api.py`lines 595C1 through 616C62 demonstrated that the `Content-Type` of the response was determined by the file extension, since `mimetypes.guess_type` guesses the `Content-Type` based on the file extension. Since the `Content-Type` was determined by the file extension of the downloaded file, an attacker could import in a `.html` file that would execute JavaScript when visited.\n\nVersion 1.10.1 contains a patch for this issue. Other remediation strategies are also available. For all user provided files that are downloaded by Label Studio, set the `Content-Security-Policy: sandbox;` response header when viewed on the site. The `sandbox` directive restricts a page's actions to prevent popups, execution of plugins and scripts and enforces a `same-origin` policy. Alternatively, restrict the allowed file extensions that may be downloaded.","ecosystems":["PyPI"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"weaponised"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"Label Studio XSS Vulnerability on Data Import","id":"CVE-2024-23633","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":"PyPI","product":null,"products":[],"type":"xss","year":"2024"},"n_packages":3,"n_references":4,"next":{"headline":"GeoServer arbitrary file renaming vulnerability in REST Coverage/Data Store API","id":"CVE-2024-23634"},"packages":[{"ecosystem":"PyPI","fixed":["1.10.1"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"label-studio","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-fq23-g58m-799r"},{"ecosystem":"PyPI","fixed":["1.10.1"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"label-studio","purl":"pkg:pypi/label-studio","source":"GHSA-fq23-g58m-799r"},{"ecosystem":"PyPI","fixed":["1.10.1"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"label-studio","purl":"pkg:pypi/label-studio","source":"PYSEC-2024-128"}],"prev":{"headline":"Motorola MR2600 Arbitrary Firmware Upload Vulnerability","id":"CVE-2024-23630"},"products":["label-studio"],"published":"2024-01-23","related":[{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Label Studio has Hardcoded Django `SECRET_KEY` that can be Abused to Forge Session Tokens","id":"CVE-2023-43791","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2023-11-09"},{"cvss_score":8.6,"headline":"Label Studio vulnerable to full account takeover by chaining Stored XSS + IDOR in User Profile via custom_hotkeys field","id":"CVE-2026-22033","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-01-12"},{"cvss_score":8.6,"headline":"Label Studio allows Server-Side Request Forgery in the S3 Storage Endpoint","id":"CVE-2025-25297","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2025-02-14"},{"cvss_score":7.6,"headline":"label-studio vulnerable to Cross-Site Scripting (Reflected) via the label_config parameter.","id":"CVE-2025-47783","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2025-05-14"},{"cvss_score":7.5,"headline":"Object Relational Mapper Leak Vulnerability in Filtering Task in Label Studio","id":"CVE-2023-47117","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2023-11-13"},{"cvss_score":7.1,"headline":"Label Studio XSS Vulnerability on Avatar Upload","id":"CVE-2023-47115","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2024-01-23"},{"cvss_score":6.1,"headline":"Label Studio allows Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) via GET request to `/projects/upload-example` endpoint","id":"CVE-2025-25296","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2025-02-14"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"GitHub Advisory Database","prefix":"GHSA"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"PyPA Advisory Database","prefix":"PYSEC"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"poc","technical_impact":"partial"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2024-11-13","vendors":["HumanSignal"]},"summary":"Attackers can execute arbitrary JavaScript via malicious HTML imports, potentially escalating privileges to administrator.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2024-23633/"}
