Any signed-in user can exploit it over the network, and only if a user opens a file or follows a link.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2024-29184 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: freescout-helpdesk freescout. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2024-29184/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2024-29184/index.md)","id":"CVE-2024-29184","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2024-29184/index.md","name":"CVE-2024-29184","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-fffc-phh8-5h4v"],"analysis":{"component_type":"web_application","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["privilege_escalation","account_takeover"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"FreeScout help desk","requires_auth":"low_privilege","summary":"Stored XSS in FreeScout allows attackers to bypass CSP and escalate privileges to Administrator by injecting scripts into user signatures.","user_interaction":"required","vuln_class":"xss"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"freescout","vendor":"freescout"}],"cvss":{"score":8,"severity":"high","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-79","name":"Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation"}],"description":"FreeScout is a self-hosted help desk and shared mailbox. A Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability has been identified within the Signature Input Field of the FreeScout Application prior to version 1.8.128. Stored XSS occurs when user input is not properly sanitized and is stored on the server, allowing an attacker to inject malicious scripts that will be executed when other users access the affected page. In this case, the Support Agent User can inject malicious scripts into their signature, which will then be executed when viewed by the Administrator.\n\nThe application protects users against XSS attacks by enforcing a CSP policy, the CSP Policy is:  `script-src 'self' 'nonce-abcd'  `. The CSP policy only allows the inclusion of JS files that are present on the application server and doesn't allow any inline script or script other than nonce-abcd. The CSP policy was bypassed by uploading a JS file to the server by a POST request to /conversation/upload endpoint. After this, a working XSS payload was crafted by including the uploaded JS file link as the src of the script. This bypassed the CSP policy and XSS attacks became possible.\n\nThe impact of this vulnerability is severe as it allows an attacker to compromise the FreeScout Application. By exploiting this vulnerability, the attacker can perform various malicious actions such as forcing the Administrator to execute actions without their knowledge or consent. For instance, the attacker can force the Administrator to add a new administrator controlled by the attacker, thereby giving the attacker full control over the application. Alternatively, the attacker can elevate the privileges of a low-privileged user to Administrator, further compromising the security of the application. Attackers can steal sensitive information such as login credentials, session tokens, personal identifiable information (PII), and financial data. The vulnerability can also lead to defacement of the Application.\n\nVersion 1.8.128 contains a patch for this issue.","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":false,"headline":"FreeScout Stored XSS to Privilege Escalation After CSP Bypass","id":"CVE-2024-29184","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":null,"products":[],"type":"xss","year":"2024"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":1,"next":{"headline":"FreeScout OS Command Injection vulnerability","id":"CVE-2024-29185"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"OpenRASP vulnerable to a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attack in /login","id":"CVE-2024-29183"},"products":["freescout"],"published":"2024-03-22","related":[{"cvss_score":10,"headline":"FreeScout 1.8.206 Patch Bypass for CVE-2026-27636 via Zero-Width Space Character Leads to Remote Code Execution","id":"CVE-2026-28289","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-03-03"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"FreeScout's Predictable Authentication Token Enables Account Takeover","id":"CVE-2026-27637","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-02-25"},{"cvss_score":9.3,"headline":"FreeScout: Stored XSS via Unescaped Email Template Rendering ({!! $thread-\u003ebody !!})","id":"CVE-2026-32754","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-03-19"},{"cvss_score":9.1,"headline":"FreeScout OS Command Injection vulnerability","id":"CVE-2024-29185","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2024-03-22"},{"cvss_score":8.9,"headline":"FreeScout has Authentication Bypass and Information Disclosure in SystemController via /system/cron","id":"CVE-2026-40498","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-04-21"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"FreeScout has Predictable Attachment Token that Allows Unauthenticated Private File Download via Brute Force","id":"CVE-2026-40496","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-04-21"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"FreeScout: Missing .htaccess in Restricted File Extensions Allows Remote Code Execution on Apache","id":"CVE-2026-27636","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-02-25"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"none","technical_impact":"partial"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2024-08-02","vendors":["freescout-helpdesk"]},"summary":"Stored XSS in FreeScout allows attackers to bypass CSP and escalate privileges to Administrator by injecting scripts into user signatures.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2024-29184/"}
