## What is CVE-2024-41096?

CVE-2024-41096 is a high-severity use after free vulnerability in Debian Debian Linux, published on 29 Jul 2024. It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.

### Official description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

PCI/MSI: Fix UAF in msi_capability_init

KFENCE reports the following UAF:

                msi_domain_insert_msi_desc
                    msi_alloc_desc
                        ...

Freed in case of failure in __msi_domain_alloc_locked()
__pci_enable_msi_range
    msi_capability_init
        pci_msi_setup_msi_irqs
            msi_domain_alloc_irqs_all_locked
                msi_domain_alloc_locked
                    __msi_domain_alloc_locked => fails
                    msi_domain_free_locked
                        ...

That failure propagates back to pci_msi_setup_msi_irqs() in
msi_capability_init() which accesses the descriptor for unmasking in the
error exit path.

Cure it by copying the descriptor and using the copy for the error exit path
unmask operation.

```text
Check this codebase for CVE-2024-41096 and fix it if it is affected.
What it is: CVE-2024-41096 is a high-severity use after free vulnerability in Debian Debian Linux, published on 29 Jul 2024. It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.
Exploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2024-41096 in the wild and no public exploit code.
Affected product: Debian Debian Linux. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.
Task:
1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.
2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.
3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.
4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.
5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.
