It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2024-56545 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: Linux kernel. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2024-56545/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2024-56545/index.md)","id":"CVE-2024-56545","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2024-56545/index.md","name":"CVE-2024-56545","record":{"aliases":["BELL-CVE-2024-56545","DEBIAN-CVE-2024-56545","GHSA-r47r-3q5h-27v7","UBUNTU-CVE-2024-56545"],"analysis":{"component_type":"kernel","fix_type":"patch","impacts":["denial_of_service"],"network_reachable":"adjacent_or_local","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Linux kernel driver","requires_auth":"low_privilege","summary":"A missing devres group allocation in the Hyper-V HID driver causes a kernel warning and potential crash when the module is unloaded.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"null_dereference"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"Linux","cpe":[{"product":"linux_kernel","vendor":"linux"}],"cvss":{"score":5.5,"severity":"medium","source":"nvd","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[],"description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nHID: hyperv: streamline driver probe to avoid devres issues\n\nIt was found that unloading 'hid_hyperv' module results in a devres\ncomplaint:\n\n ...\n hv_vmbus: unregistering driver hid_hyperv\n ------------[ cut here ]------------\n WARNING: CPU: 2 PID: 3983 at drivers/base/devres.c:691 devres_release_group+0x1f2/0x2c0\n ...\n Call Trace:\n  \u003cTASK\u003e\n  ? devres_release_group+0x1f2/0x2c0\n  ? __warn+0xd1/0x1c0\n  ? devres_release_group+0x1f2/0x2c0\n  ? report_bug+0x32a/0x3c0\n  ? handle_bug+0x53/0xa0\n  ? exc_invalid_op+0x18/0x50\n  ? asm_exc_invalid_op+0x1a/0x20\n  ? devres_release_group+0x1f2/0x2c0\n  ? devres_release_group+0x90/0x2c0\n  ? rcu_is_watching+0x15/0xb0\n  ? __pfx_devres_release_group+0x10/0x10\n  hid_device_remove+0xf5/0x220\n  device_release_driver_internal+0x371/0x540\n  ? klist_put+0xf3/0x170\n  bus_remove_device+0x1f1/0x3f0\n  device_del+0x33f/0x8c0\n  ? __pfx_device_del+0x10/0x10\n  ? cleanup_srcu_struct+0x337/0x500\n  hid_destroy_device+0xc8/0x130\n  mousevsc_remove+0xd2/0x1d0 [hid_hyperv]\n  device_release_driver_internal+0x371/0x540\n  driver_detach+0xc5/0x180\n  bus_remove_driver+0x11e/0x2a0\n  ? __mutex_unlock_slowpath+0x160/0x5e0\n  vmbus_driver_unregister+0x62/0x2b0 [hv_vmbus]\n  ...\n\nAnd the issue seems to be that the corresponding devres group is not\nallocated. Normally, devres_open_group() is called from\n__hid_device_probe() but Hyper-V HID driver overrides 'hid_dev-\u003edriver'\nwith 'mousevsc_hid_driver' stub and basically re-implements\n__hid_device_probe() by calling hid_parse() and hid_hw_start() but not\ndevres_open_group(). hid_device_probe() does not call __hid_device_probe()\nfor it. Later, when the driver is removed, hid_device_remove() calls\ndevres_release_group() as it doesn't check whether hdev-\u003edriver was\ninitially overridden or not.\n\nThe issue seems to be related to the commit 62c68e7cee33 (\"HID: ensure\ntimely release of driver-allocated resources\") but the commit itself seems\nto be correct.\n\nFix the issue by dropping the 'hid_dev-\u003edriver' override and using\nhid_register_driver()/hid_unregister_driver() instead. Alternatively, it\nwould have been possible to rely on the default handling but\nHID_CONNECT_DEFAULT implies HID_CONNECT_HIDRAW and it doesn't seem to work\nfor mousevsc as-is.","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"HID: hyperv: streamline driver probe to avoid devres issues","id":"CVE-2024-56545","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":"linux:linux_kernel","products":["linux:linux_kernel"],"type":"null_dereference","year":"2024"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":7,"next":{"headline":"drivers: soc: xilinx: add the missing kfree in xlnx_add_cb_for_suspend()","id":"CVE-2024-56546"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"udmabuf: change folios array from kmalloc to kvmalloc","id":"CVE-2024-56544"},"products":["Linux"],"published":"2024-12-27","related":[{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Out-of-Bounds Write","id":"CVE-2026-53266","kev_date_added":"2026-09-18","published":"2026-06-25"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Improper Input Validation","id":"CVE-2013-6282","kev_date_added":"2022-09-15","published":"2013-11-19"},{"cvss_score":8.4,"headline":"Linux Kernel Heap-Based Buffer Overflow","id":"CVE-2022-0185","kev_date_added":"2024-08-21","published":"2022-02-11"},{"cvss_score":8.4,"headline":"Linux Kernel Privilege Escalation","id":"CVE-2013-2094","kev_date_added":"2022-09-15","published":"2013-05-14"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Unspecified","id":"CVE-2026-53362","kev_date_added":"2026-08-27","published":"2026-07-04"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Missing Initialization of a Variable","id":"CVE-2026-46300","kev_date_added":"2026-10-28","published":"2026-05-23"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Race Condition","id":"CVE-2025-39964","kev_date_added":"2026-09-18","published":"2025-10-13"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":null,"exploitation":null,"technical_impact":null},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-10-03","vendors":["Linux"]},"summary":"A missing devres group allocation in the Hyper-V HID driver causes a kernel warning and potential crash when the module is unloaded.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2024-56545/"}
