## What is CVE-2024-56677?

CVE-2024-56677 is a high-severity denial of service vulnerability in Linux kernel, published on 28 Dec 2024. It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.

### Official description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

powerpc/fadump: Move fadump_cma_init to setup_arch() after initmem_init()

During early init CMA_MIN_ALIGNMENT_BYTES can be PAGE_SIZE,
since pageblock_order is still zero and it gets initialized
later during initmem_init() e.g.
setup_arch() -> initmem_init() -> sparse_init() -> set_pageblock_order()

One such use case where this causes issue is -
early_setup() -> early_init_devtree() -> fadump_reserve_mem() -> fadump_cma_init()

This causes CMA memory alignment check to be bypassed in
cma_init_reserved_mem(). Then later cma_activate_area() can hit
a VM_BUG_ON_PAGE(pfn & ((1 << order) - 1)) if the reserved memory
area was not pageblock_order aligned.

Fix it by moving the fadump_cma_init() after initmem_init(),
where other such cma reservations also gets called.

## Fix prompt for AI coding agents

```text
Check this codebase for CVE-2024-56677 and fix it if it is affected.
What it is: CVE-2024-56677 is a high-severity denial of service vulnerability in Linux kernel, published on 28 Dec 2024. It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.
Exploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2024-56677 in the wild and no public exploit code.
Affected product: Linux kernel. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.
Task:
1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.
2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.
3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.
4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.
5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.
