## What is CVE-2025-26466?

CVE-2025-26466 is a medium-severity denial of service vulnerability in Canonical Ubuntu Linux, published on 28 Feb 2025. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.

### Official description

A flaw was found in the OpenSSH package. For each ping packet the SSH server receives, a pong packet is allocated in a memory buffer and stored in a queue of packages. It is only freed when the server/client key exchange has finished. A malicious client may keep sending such packages, leading to an uncontrolled increase in memory consumption on the server side. Consequently, the server may become unavailable, resulting in a denial of service attack.

Weakness: CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling)

## Fix prompt for AI coding agents

```text
Check this codebase for CVE-2025-26466 and fix it if it is affected.
What it is: CVE-2025-26466 is a medium-severity denial of service vulnerability in Canonical Ubuntu Linux, published on 28 Feb 2025. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.
Exploitation: It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2025-26466 exists.
Affected product: Canonical Ubuntu Linux. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.
Task:
1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.
2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.
3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.
4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.
5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.
