It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2025-38606 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: Linux kernel. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2025-38606/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2025-38606/index.md)","id":"CVE-2025-38606","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2025-38606/index.md","name":"CVE-2025-38606","record":{"aliases":["BELL-CVE-2025-38606","GHSA-2hfg-pw5c-5cwc","UBUNTU-CVE-2025-38606"],"analysis":{"component_type":"kernel","fix_type":"patch","impacts":["denial_of_service"],"network_reachable":"adjacent_or_local","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Linux kernel WiFi driver","requires_auth":"low_privilege","summary":"A null pointer dereference in the ath12k WiFi driver during beacon miss handling can cause a kernel crash, leading to denial of service.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"null_dereference"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"Linux","cpe":[{"product":"linux_kernel","vendor":"linux"}],"cvss":{"score":5.5,"severity":"medium","source":"nvd","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-476","name":"NULL Pointer Dereference"}],"description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nwifi: ath12k: Avoid accessing uninitialized arvif-\u003ear during beacon miss\n\nDuring beacon miss handling, ath12k driver iterates over active virtual\ninterfaces (vifs) and attempts to access the radio object (ar) via\narvif-\u003edeflink-\u003ear.\n\nHowever, after commit aa80f12f3bed (\"wifi: ath12k: defer vdev creation for\nMLO\"), arvif is linked to a radio only after vdev creation, typically when\na channel is assigned or a scan is requested.\nFor P2P capable devices, a default P2P interface is created by\nwpa_supplicant along with regular station interfaces, these serve as dummy\ninterfaces for P2P-capable stations, lack an associated netdev and initiate\nfrequent scans to discover neighbor p2p devices. When a scan is initiated\non such P2P vifs, driver selects destination radio (ar) based on scan\nfrequency, creates a scan vdev, and attaches arvif to the radio. Once the\nscan completes or is aborted, the scan vdev is deleted, detaching arvif\nfrom the radio and leaving arvif-\u003ear uninitialized.\n\nWhile handling beacon miss for station interfaces, P2P interface is also\nencountered in the vif iteration and ath12k_mac_handle_beacon_miss_iter()\ntries to dereference the uninitialized arvif-\u003edeflink-\u003ear.\n\nFix this by verifying that vdev is created for the arvif before accessing\nits ar during beacon miss handling and similar vif iterator callbacks.\n\n==========================================================================\n wlp6s0: detected beacon loss from AP (missed 7 beacons) - probing\n KASAN: null-ptr-deref in range [0x0000000000000010-0x0000000000000017]\n\n CPU: 5 UID: 0 PID: 0 Comm: swapper/5 Not tainted 6.16.0-rc1-wt-ath+ #2 PREEMPT(full)\n RIP: 0010:ath12k_mac_handle_beacon_miss_iter+0xb5/0x1a0 [ath12k]\n Call Trace:\n  __iterate_interfaces+0x11a/0x410 [mac80211]\n  ieee80211_iterate_active_interfaces_atomic+0x61/0x140 [mac80211]\n  ath12k_mac_handle_beacon_miss+0xa1/0xf0 [ath12k]\n  ath12k_roam_event+0x393/0x560 [ath12k]\n  ath12k_wmi_op_rx+0x1486/0x28c0 [ath12k]\n  ath12k_htc_process_trailer.isra.0+0x2fb/0x620 [ath12k]\n  ath12k_htc_rx_completion_handler+0x448/0x830 [ath12k]\n  ath12k_ce_recv_process_cb+0x549/0x9e0 [ath12k]\n  ath12k_ce_per_engine_service+0xbe/0xf0 [ath12k]\n  ath12k_pci_ce_workqueue+0x69/0x120 [ath12k]\n  process_one_work+0xe3a/0x1430\n\nTested-on: QCN9274 hw2.0 PCI WLAN.WBE.1.4.1-00199-QCAHKSWPL_SILICONZ-1\nTested-on: WCN7850 hw2.0 PCI WLAN.HMT.1.1.c5-00284.1-QCAHMTSWPL_V1.0_V2.0_SILICONZ-3","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"wifi: ath12k: Avoid accessing uninitialized arvif-\u003ear during beacon miss","id":"CVE-2025-38606","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":"linux:linux_kernel","products":["linux:linux_kernel"],"type":"null_dereference","year":"2025"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":3,"next":{"headline":"bpf: handle jset (if a \u0026 b ...) as a jump in CFG computation","id":"CVE-2025-38607"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"wifi: ath12k: Pass ab pointer directly to ath12k_dp_tx_get_encap_type()","id":"CVE-2025-38605"},"products":["Linux"],"published":"2025-08-19","related":[{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Out-of-Bounds Write","id":"CVE-2026-53266","kev_date_added":"2026-09-18","published":"2026-06-25"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Improper Input Validation","id":"CVE-2013-6282","kev_date_added":"2022-09-15","published":"2013-11-19"},{"cvss_score":8.4,"headline":"Linux Kernel Heap-Based Buffer Overflow","id":"CVE-2022-0185","kev_date_added":"2024-08-21","published":"2022-02-11"},{"cvss_score":8.4,"headline":"Linux Kernel Privilege Escalation","id":"CVE-2013-2094","kev_date_added":"2022-09-15","published":"2013-05-14"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Unspecified","id":"CVE-2026-53362","kev_date_added":"2026-08-27","published":"2026-07-04"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Missing Initialization of a Variable","id":"CVE-2026-46300","kev_date_added":"2026-10-28","published":"2026-05-23"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Race Condition","id":"CVE-2025-39964","kev_date_added":"2026-09-18","published":"2025-10-13"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":null,"exploitation":null,"technical_impact":null},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-05-11","vendors":["Linux"]},"summary":"A null pointer dereference in the ath12k WiFi driver during beacon miss handling can cause a kernel crash, leading to denial of service.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2025-38606/"}
