# CVE-2025-40149: tls: Use __sk_dst_get() and dst_dev_rcu() in get_netdev_for_sock().

> A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel TLS module allows attackers to trigger crashes or potentially execute code via setsockopt calls.

## What is CVE-2025-40149?

CVE-2025-40149 is a high-severity use after free vulnerability in Linux kernel, published on 12 Nov 2025. It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.

### Official description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

tls: Use __sk_dst_get() and dst_dev_rcu() in get_netdev_for_sock().

get_netdev_for_sock() is called during setsockopt(),
so not under RCU.

Using sk_dst_get(sk)->dev could trigger UAF.

Let's use __sk_dst_get() and dst_dev_rcu().

Note that the only ->ndo_sk_get_lower_dev() user is
bond_sk_get_lower_dev(), which uses RCU.

Weakness: CWE-416 (Use After Free)

## Fix prompt for AI coding agents

```text
Check this codebase for CVE-2025-40149 and fix it if it is affected.
What it is: CVE-2025-40149 is a high-severity use after free vulnerability in Linux kernel, published on 12 Nov 2025. It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.
Exploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2025-40149 in the wild and no public exploit code.
Affected product: Linux kernel. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.
Task:
1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.
2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.
3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.
4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.
5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.
