## What is CVE-2025-47273?

CVE-2025-47273 is a high-severity path traversal vulnerability in Debian Debian Linux, published on 17 May 2025. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.

### Official description

setuptools is a package that allows users to download, build, install, upgrade, and uninstall Python packages. A path traversal vulnerability in `PackageIndex` is present in setuptools prior to version 78.1.1. An attacker would be allowed to write files to arbitrary locations on the filesystem with the permissions of the process running the Python code, which could escalate to remote code execution depending on the context. Version 78.1.1 fixes the issue.

Weakness: CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory)

## Fix prompt for AI coding agents

```text
Check this codebase for CVE-2025-47273 and fix it if it is affected.
What it is: CVE-2025-47273 is a high-severity path traversal vulnerability in Debian Debian Linux, published on 17 May 2025. An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.
Exploitation: It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2025-47273 exists.
Affected packages and fixed versions:
- setuptools (Bitnami): affected all versions; fixed in 78.1.1
- setuptools (PyPI): affected all versions; fixed in 78.1.1
- setuptools (PyPI): affected all versions; fixed in 78.1.1
- setuptools (PyPI): affected all versions; fixed in 78.1.1
Task:
1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.
2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.
3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.
4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.
5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.
