Any signed-in user can exploit it over the network, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2025-64433 exists.\n\nAffected packages and fixed versions:\n- kubevirt.io/kubevirt (Go): affected all versions; fixed in 1.5.3, 1.6.0-beta.0.0.20250801195231-a81b27d4600c, 1.6.1\n- kubevirt.io/kubevirt (Go): affected all versions; fixed in 1.5.3\n- kubevirt.io/kubevirt (Go): affected all versions; fixed in 1.5.3\n- kubevirt.io/kubevirt (Go): affected from 1.6.0-alpha.0; fixed in 1.6.1\n- kubevirt.io/kubevirt (Go): affected from 1.6.0-alpha.0; fixed in 1.6.1\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2025-64433/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2025-64433/index.md)","id":"CVE-2025-64433","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2025-64433/index.md","name":"CVE-2025-64433","record":{"aliases":["AZL-69799","AZL-69958","GHSA-qw6q-3pgr-5cwq","GO-2025-4109","MINI-fgj7-85wg-q85x","MINI-mhm4-2fgw-g69r"],"analysis":{"component_type":"container_or_infrastructure","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["data_read"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Kubernetes VM add-on","requires_auth":"low_privilege","summary":"A malicious user with PVC control can read arbitrary files from the virt-launcher pod via symlink abuse, bypassing UID restrictions.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"path_traversal"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"kubevirt","vendor":"kubevirt"}],"cvss":{"score":6.5,"severity":"medium","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-22","name":"Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory"}],"description":"KubeVirt is a virtual machine management add-on for Kubernetes. Prior to 1.5.3 and 1.6.1, a vulnerability was discovered that allows a VM to read arbitrary files from the virt-launcher pod's file system. This issue stems from improper symlink handling when mounting PVC disks into a VM. Specifically, if a malicious user has full or partial control over the contents of a PVC, they can create a symbolic link that points to a file within the virt-launcher pod's file system. Since libvirt can treat regular files as block devices, any file on the pod's file system that is symlinked in this way can be mounted into the VM and subsequently read. Although a security mechanism exists where VMs are executed as an unprivileged user with UID 107 inside the virt-launcher container, limiting the scope of accessible resources, this restriction is bypassed due to a second vulnerability. The latter causes the ownership of any file intended for mounting to be changed to the unprivileged user with UID 107 prior to mounting. As a result, an attacker can gain access to and read arbitrary files located within the virt-launcher pod's file system or on a mounted PVC from within the guest VM. This vulnerability is fixed in 1.5.3 and 1.6.1.","ecosystems":["Go"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"weaponised"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"KubeVirt Arbitrary Container File Read","id":"CVE-2025-64433","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":"Go","product":null,"products":[],"type":"path_traversal","year":"2025"},"n_packages":5,"n_references":4,"next":{"headline":"KubeVirt Improper TLS Certificate Management Handling Allows API Identity Spoofing","id":"CVE-2025-64434"},"packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["1.5.3","1.6.0-beta.0.0.20250801195231-a81b27d4600c","1.6.1"],"introduced":["0","1.6.0-alpha.0","1.6.0-rc.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"kubevirt.io/kubevirt","purl":"pkg:golang/kubevirt.io/kubevirt","source":"GO-2025-4109"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["1.5.3"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"kubevirt.io/kubevirt","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-qw6q-3pgr-5cwq"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["1.5.3"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"kubevirt.io/kubevirt","purl":"pkg:golang/kubevirt.io/kubevirt","source":"GHSA-qw6q-3pgr-5cwq"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["1.6.1"],"introduced":["1.6.0-alpha.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"kubevirt.io/kubevirt","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-qw6q-3pgr-5cwq"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["1.6.1"],"introduced":["1.6.0-alpha.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"kubevirt.io/kubevirt","purl":"pkg:golang/kubevirt.io/kubevirt","source":"GHSA-qw6q-3pgr-5cwq"}],"prev":{"headline":"KubeVirt Affected by an Authentication Bypass in Kubernetes Aggregation Layer","id":"CVE-2025-64432"},"products":["kubevirt"],"published":"2025-11-07","related":[{"cvss_score":9.9,"headline":"Privilege Escalation in kubevirt","id":"CVE-2020-14316","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2020-07-29"},{"cvss_score":8.7,"headline":"Path Traversal vulnerability in Kubevirt","id":"CVE-2022-1798","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2022-09-15"},{"cvss_score":8.5,"headline":"KubeVirt Vulnerable to Arbitrary Host File Read and Write","id":"CVE-2025-64324","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2025-11-18"},{"cvss_score":8.2,"headline":"On a compromised KubeVirt node, the virt-handler service account can be used to modify all node specs","id":"CVE-2023-26484","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2023-03-15"},{"cvss_score":7.3,"headline":"Path traversal in Red Hat Container Native Virtualization 4.12","id":"CVE-2026-13201","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-06-24"},{"cvss_score":6.9,"headline":"KubeVirt Excessive Role Permissions Could Enable Unauthorized VMI Migrations Between Nodes","id":"CVE-2025-64436","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2025-11-07"},{"cvss_score":6.5,"headline":"Auth bypass in Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization 4","id":"CVE-2026-13208","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-06-24"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"GitHub Advisory Database","prefix":"GHSA"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"Go Vulnerability Database","prefix":"GO"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"poc","technical_impact":"partial"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2025-11-10","vendors":["kubevirt"]},"summary":"A malicious user with PVC control can read arbitrary files from the virt-launcher pod via symlink abuse, bypassing UID restrictions.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2025-64433/"}
