It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2026-23086 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: Linux kernel. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-23086/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-23086/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-23086","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-23086/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-23086","record":{"aliases":["AZL-77151","BELL-CVE-2026-23086","DEBIAN-CVE-2026-23086","GHSA-45gq-hr3j-jmrq","ROOT-OS-DEBIAN-11-CVE-2026-23086","ROOT-OS-DEBIAN-12-CVE-2026-23086","ROOT-OS-DEBIAN-13-CVE-2026-23086","ROOT-OS-UBUNTU-2204-CVE-2026-23086","ROOT-OS-UBUNTU-2404-CVE-2026-23086","UBUNTU-CVE-2026-23086"],"analysis":{"component_type":"kernel","fix_type":"patch","impacts":["denial_of_service"],"network_reachable":"adjacent_or_local","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Linux kernel vsock","requires_auth":"low_privilege","summary":"A malicious guest can exhaust host memory via vsock TX credits, causing denial of service; kernel maintainers should apply the patch.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"denial_of_service"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"Linux","cpe":[{"product":"linux_kernel","vendor":"linux"}],"cvss":{"score":5.5,"severity":"medium","source":"nvd","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-400","name":"Uncontrolled Resource Consumption"}],"description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nvsock/virtio: cap TX credit to local buffer size\n\nThe virtio transports derives its TX credit directly from peer_buf_alloc,\nwhich is set from the remote endpoint's SO_VM_SOCKETS_BUFFER_SIZE value.\n\nOn the host side this means that the amount of data we are willing to\nqueue for a connection is scaled by a guest-chosen buffer size, rather\nthan the host's own vsock configuration. A malicious guest can advertise\na large buffer and read slowly, causing the host to allocate a\ncorrespondingly large amount of sk_buff memory.\nThe same thing would happen in the guest with a malicious host, since\nvirtio transports share the same code base.\n\nIntroduce a small helper, virtio_transport_tx_buf_size(), that\nreturns min(peer_buf_alloc, buf_alloc), and use it wherever we consume\npeer_buf_alloc.\n\nThis ensures the effective TX window is bounded by both the peer's\nadvertised buffer and our own buf_alloc (already clamped to\nbuffer_max_size via SO_VM_SOCKETS_BUFFER_MAX_SIZE), so a remote peer\ncannot force the other to queue more data than allowed by its own\nvsock settings.\n\nOn an unpatched Ubuntu 22.04 host (~64 GiB RAM), running a PoC with\n32 guest vsock connections advertising 2 GiB each and reading slowly\ndrove Slab/SUnreclaim from ~0.5 GiB to ~57 GiB; the system only\nrecovered after killing the QEMU process. That said, if QEMU memory is\nlimited with cgroups, the maximum memory used will be limited.\n\nWith this patch applied:\n\n  Before:\n    MemFree:        ~61.6 GiB\n    Slab:           ~142 MiB\n    SUnreclaim:     ~117 MiB\n\n  After 32 high-credit connections:\n    MemFree:        ~61.5 GiB\n    Slab:           ~178 MiB\n    SUnreclaim:     ~152 MiB\n\nOnly ~35 MiB increase in Slab/SUnreclaim, no host OOM, and the guest\nremains responsive.\n\nCompatibility with non-virtio transports:\n\n  - VMCI uses the AF_VSOCK buffer knobs to size its queue pairs per\n    socket based on the local vsk-\u003ebuffer_* values; the remote side\n    cannot enlarge those queues beyond what the local endpoint\n    configured.\n\n  - Hyper-V's vsock transport uses fixed-size VMBus ring buffers and\n    an MTU bound; there is no peer-controlled credit field comparable\n    to peer_buf_alloc, and the remote endpoint cannot drive in-flight\n    kernel memory above those ring sizes.\n\n  - The loopback path reuses virtio_transport_common.c, so it\n    naturally follows the same semantics as the virtio transport.\n\nThis change is limited to virtio_transport_common.c and thus affects\nvirtio-vsock, vhost-vsock, and loopback, bringing them in line with the\n\"remote window intersected with local policy\" behaviour that VMCI and\nHyper-V already effectively have.\n\n[Stefano: small adjustments after changing the previous patch]\n[Stefano: tweak the commit message]","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"vsock/virtio: cap TX credit to local buffer size","id":"CVE-2026-23086","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":"linux:linux_kernel","products":["linux:linux_kernel"],"type":"denial_of_service","year":"2026"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":5,"next":{"headline":"scsi: xen: scsiback: Fix potential memory leak in scsiback_remove()","id":"CVE-2026-23087"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"irqchip/gic-v3-its: Avoid truncating memory addresses","id":"CVE-2026-23085"},"products":["Linux"],"published":"2026-02-04","related":[{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Out-of-Bounds Write","id":"CVE-2026-53266","kev_date_added":"2026-09-18","published":"2026-06-25"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Improper Input Validation","id":"CVE-2013-6282","kev_date_added":"2022-09-15","published":"2013-11-19"},{"cvss_score":8.4,"headline":"Linux Kernel Heap-Based Buffer Overflow","id":"CVE-2022-0185","kev_date_added":"2024-08-21","published":"2022-02-11"},{"cvss_score":8.4,"headline":"Linux Kernel Privilege Escalation","id":"CVE-2013-2094","kev_date_added":"2022-09-15","published":"2013-05-14"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Unspecified","id":"CVE-2026-53362","kev_date_added":"2026-08-27","published":"2026-07-04"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Missing Initialization of a Variable","id":"CVE-2026-46300","kev_date_added":"2026-10-28","published":"2026-05-23"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Race Condition","id":"CVE-2025-39964","kev_date_added":"2026-09-18","published":"2025-10-13"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"none","technical_impact":"partial"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-10-19","vendors":["Linux"]},"summary":"A malicious guest can exhaust host memory via vsock TX credits, causing denial of service; kernel maintainers should apply the patch.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-23086/"}
