An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, and only if a user opens a file or follows a link.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2026-23950 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected packages and fixed versions:\n- tar (npm): affected all versions; fixed in 7.5.4\n- tar (npm): affected all versions; fixed in 7.5.4\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-23950/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-23950/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-23950","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-23950/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-23950","record":{"aliases":["CLEANSTART-2026-UO17156","CLEANSTART-2026-VN06926","DEBIAN-CVE-2026-23950","ECHO-f4de-fc09-5377","GHSA-r6q2-hw4h-h46w","MINI-3hc2-w3hh-2gvw","MINI-45cm-f484-j799","MINI-4wmr-m9p9-w4rx","MINI-5267-73wv-ppm6","MINI-5g45-3rcf-9jgx","MINI-77mc-3v7h-w43p","MINI-7cmx-96v2-whg8","MINI-8mv2-6jrc-3x8q","MINI-8q87-c75h-cx6r","MINI-c6jc-gcqx-v9f2","MINI-g8vv-jw53-fj6q","MINI-hfrh-2vw3-q5wc","MINI-jr7c-wwp4-6jw7","MINI-m2mc-p5mj-4q9p","MINI-ppvp-79rp-fwgp","MINI-qmw8-jcjc-h8xj","MINI-r773-f2xx-q2jp","MINI-v3cg-pjp5-p846","MINI-wf8c-gr35-vxvg","MINI-x23r-pxp5-vjwh","MINI-xvmf-wg4q-q8c2","MINI-xwhc-7jmr-vcm7","ROOT-APP-NPM-CVE-2026-23950","UBUNTU-CVE-2026-23950"],"analysis":{"component_type":"library","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["data_modify","code_execution"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Node.js tar library","requires_auth":"none","summary":"An attacker can exploit a race condition in node-tar on macOS to bypass path locks and overwrite arbitrary files via symlink poisoning.","user_interaction":"required","vuln_class":"race_condition"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"tar","vendor":"isaacs"}],"cvss":{"score":8.8,"severity":"high","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:H/A:L","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-367","name":"Time-of-check Time-of-use (TOCTOU) Race Condition"},{"id":"CWE-352","name":"Cross-Site Request Forgery"},{"id":"CWE-176","name":"Improper Handling of Unicode Encoding"}],"description":"node-tar,a Tar for Node.js, has a race condition vulnerability in versions up to and including 7.5.3. This is due to an incomplete handling of Unicode path collisions in the `path-reservations` system. On case-insensitive or normalization-insensitive filesystems (such as macOS APFS, In which it has been tested), the library fails to lock colliding paths (e.g., `ß` and `ss`), allowing them to be processed in parallel. This bypasses the library's internal concurrency safeguards and permits Symlink Poisoning attacks via race conditions. The library uses a `PathReservations` system to ensure that metadata checks and file operations for the same path are serialized. This prevents race conditions where one entry might clobber another concurrently. This is a Race Condition which enables Arbitrary File Overwrite. This vulnerability affects users and systems using node-tar on macOS (APFS/HFS+). Because of using `NFD` Unicode normalization (in which `ß` and `ss` are different), conflicting paths do not have their order properly preserved under filesystems that ignore Unicode normalization (e.g., APFS (in which `ß` causes an inode collision with `ss`)). This enables an attacker to circumvent internal parallelization locks (`PathReservations`) using conflicting filenames within a malicious tar archive. The patch in version 7.5.4 updates `path-reservations.js` to use a normalization form that matches the target filesystem's behavior (e.g., `NFKD`), followed by first `toLocaleLowerCase('en')` and then `toLocaleUpperCase('en')`. As a workaround, users who cannot upgrade promptly, and who are programmatically using `node-tar` to extract arbitrary tarball data should filter out all `SymbolicLink` entries (as npm does) to defend against arbitrary file writes via this file system entry name collision issue.","ecosystems":["npm"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"node-tar has Race Condition in Path Reservations via Unicode Ligature Collisions on macOS APFS","id":"CVE-2026-23950","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":"npm","product":null,"products":[],"type":"race_condition","year":"2026"},"n_packages":2,"n_references":2,"next":{"headline":"SumatraPDF's Integer Underflow in PalmDbReader Leads to Crash","id":"CVE-2026-23951"},"packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","fixed":["7.5.4"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"tar","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-r6q2-hw4h-h46w"},{"ecosystem":"npm","fixed":["7.5.4"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"tar","purl":"pkg:npm/tar","source":"GHSA-r6q2-hw4h-h46w"}],"prev":{"headline":"jaraco.context Has a Path Traversal Vulnerability","id":"CVE-2026-23949"},"products":["node-tar"],"published":"2026-01-20","related":[{"cvss_score":9.2,"headline":"node-tar: Decompression/parse DoS via unlimited input","id":"CVE-2026-59873","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-07-08"},{"cvss_score":8.7,"headline":"node-tar: Negative tar entry size causes infinite loop in archive replace","id":"CVE-2026-59874","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-07-08"},{"cvss_score":8.2,"headline":"node-tar Symlink Path Traversal via Drive-Relative Linkpath","id":"CVE-2026-31802","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-03-09"},{"cvss_score":8.2,"headline":"node-tar: Hardlink Path Traversal via Drive-Relative Linkpath","id":"CVE-2026-29786","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-03-07"},{"cvss_score":8.2,"headline":"node-tar Vulnerable to Arbitrary File Creation/Overwrite via Hardlink Path Traversal","id":"CVE-2026-24842","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-01-28"},{"cvss_score":8.2,"headline":"node-tar Vulnerable to Arbitrary File Overwrite and Symlink Poisoning via Insufficient Path Sanitization","id":"CVE-2026-23745","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-01-16"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"GitHub Advisory Database","prefix":"GHSA"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"none","technical_impact":"partial"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-09-01","vendors":["isaacs"]},"summary":"An attacker can exploit a race condition in node-tar on macOS to bypass path locks and overwrite arbitrary files via symlink poisoning.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-23950/"}
