It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2026-24765 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected packages and fixed versions:\n- phpunit/phpunit (Packagist): affected all versions; fixed in 8.5.52\n- phpunit/phpunit (Packagist): affected all versions; fixed in 8.5.52\n- phpunit/phpunit (Packagist): affected from 10.0.0; fixed in 10.5.62\n- phpunit/phpunit (Packagist): affected from 10.0.0; fixed in 10.5.62\n- phpunit/phpunit (Packagist): affected from 11.0.0; fixed in 11.5.50\n- phpunit/phpunit (Packagist): affected from 11.0.0; fixed in 11.5.50\n- phpunit/phpunit (Packagist): affected from 12.0.0; fixed in 12.5.8\n- phpunit/phpunit (Packagist): affected from 12.0.0; fixed in 12.5.8\n- phpunit/phpunit (Packagist): affected from 9.0.0; fixed in 9.6.33\n- phpunit/phpunit (Packagist): affected from 9.0.0; fixed in 9.6.33\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-24765/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-24765/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-24765","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-24765/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-24765","record":{"aliases":["CLSA-2026-1771980787","CLSA-2026-1773276786","CLSA-2026-1776732788","CLSA-2026-1776818215","CLSA-2026-1776818222","CLSA-2026-1776818223","CLSA-2026-1776819190","CLSA-2026-1779151615","DEBIAN-CVE-2026-24765","DLA-4470-1","GHSA-vvj3-c3rp-c85p","UBUNTU-CVE-2026-24765"],"analysis":{"component_type":"developer_tool","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["code_execution"],"network_reachable":"adjacent_or_local","non_default_config":true,"product_category":"PHP testing framework","requires_auth":"low_privilege","summary":"An attacker with local file write access can achieve arbitrary code execution by placing malicious serialized data in code coverage files during PHPT test runs.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"deserialization"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"debian_linux","vendor":"debian"},{"product":"phpunit","vendor":"phpunit_project"}],"cvss":{"score":7.8,"severity":"high","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-502","name":"Deserialization of Untrusted Data"}],"description":"PHPUnit is a testing framework for PHP. A vulnerability has been discovered in versions prior to 12.5.8, 11.5.50, 10.5.62, 9.6.33, and 8.5.52 involving unsafe deserialization of code coverage data in PHPT test execution. The vulnerability exists in the `cleanupForCoverage()` method, which deserializes code coverage files without validation, potentially allowing remote code execution if malicious `.coverage` files are present prior to the execution of the PHPT test. The vulnerability occurs when a `.coverage` file, which should not exist before test execution, is deserialized without the `allowed_classes` parameter restriction. An attacker with local file write access can place a malicious serialized object with a `__wakeup()` method into the file system, leading to arbitrary code execution during test runs with code coverage instrumentation enabled. This vulnerability requires local file write access to the location where PHPUnit stores or expects code coverage files for PHPT tests. This can occur through CI/CD pipeline attacks, the local development environment, and/or compromised dependencies. Rather than just silently sanitizing the input via `['allowed_classes' =\u003e false]`, the maintainer has chosen to make the anomalous state explicit by treating pre-existing `.coverage` files for PHPT tests as an error condition. Starting in versions  in versions 12.5.8, 11.5.50, 10.5.62, 9.6.33, when a `.coverage` file is detected for a PHPT test prior to execution, PHPUnit will emit a clear error message identifying the anomalous state. Organizations can reduce the effective risk of this vulnerability through proper CI/CD configuration, including ephemeral runners, code review enforcement, branch protection, artifact isolation, and access control.","ecosystems":["Packagist"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"PHPUnit Vulnerable to Unsafe Deserialization in PHPT Code Coverage Handling","id":"CVE-2026-24765","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":"Packagist","product":"debian:debian_linux","products":["debian:debian_linux"],"type":"deserialization","year":"2026"},"n_packages":10,"n_references":7,"next":{"headline":"NocoDB Vulnerable to Prototype Pollution in Connection Test Endpoint, Leading to DoS","id":"CVE-2026-24766"},"packages":[{"ecosystem":"Packagist","fixed":["8.5.52"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"phpunit/phpunit","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-vvj3-c3rp-c85p"},{"ecosystem":"Packagist","fixed":["8.5.52"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"phpunit/phpunit","purl":"pkg:composer/phpunit/phpunit","source":"GHSA-vvj3-c3rp-c85p"},{"ecosystem":"Packagist","fixed":["10.5.62"],"introduced":["10.0.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"phpunit/phpunit","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-vvj3-c3rp-c85p"},{"ecosystem":"Packagist","fixed":["10.5.62"],"introduced":["10.0.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"phpunit/phpunit","purl":"pkg:composer/phpunit/phpunit","source":"GHSA-vvj3-c3rp-c85p"},{"ecosystem":"Packagist","fixed":["11.5.50"],"introduced":["11.0.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"phpunit/phpunit","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-vvj3-c3rp-c85p"},{"ecosystem":"Packagist","fixed":["11.5.50"],"introduced":["11.0.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"phpunit/phpunit","purl":"pkg:composer/phpunit/phpunit","source":"GHSA-vvj3-c3rp-c85p"},{"ecosystem":"Packagist","fixed":["12.5.8"],"introduced":["12.0.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"phpunit/phpunit","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-vvj3-c3rp-c85p"},{"ecosystem":"Packagist","fixed":["12.5.8"],"introduced":["12.0.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"phpunit/phpunit","purl":"pkg:composer/phpunit/phpunit","source":"GHSA-vvj3-c3rp-c85p"},{"ecosystem":"Packagist","fixed":["9.6.33"],"introduced":["9.0.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"phpunit/phpunit","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-vvj3-c3rp-c85p"},{"ecosystem":"Packagist","fixed":["9.6.33"],"introduced":["9.0.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"phpunit/phpunit","purl":"pkg:composer/phpunit/phpunit","source":"GHSA-vvj3-c3rp-c85p"}],"prev":{"headline":"OpenClaw has Remote Code Execution via System Prompt Injection in Slack Channel Descriptions","id":"CVE-2026-24764"},"products":["phpunit"],"published":"2026-01-27","related":[{"cvss_score":10,"headline":"ProFTPD Improper Access Control","id":"CVE-2015-3306","kev_date_added":"2026-10-08","published":"2015-05-18"},{"cvss_score":9.9,"headline":"RoundCube Webmail Deserialization of Untrusted Data","id":"CVE-2025-49113","kev_date_added":"2026-02-20","published":"2025-06-02"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"GNU InetUtils Argument Injection","id":"CVE-2026-24061","kev_date_added":"2026-01-26","published":"2026-01-21"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Improper Check for Unusual or Exceptional Conditions","id":"CVE-2025-39682","kev_date_added":"2026-09-18","published":"2025-09-05"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Mozilla Firefox Use-After-Free","id":"CVE-2024-9680","kev_date_added":"2024-10-15","published":"2024-10-09"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"RARLAB UnRAR Directory Traversal","id":"CVE-2022-30333","kev_date_added":"2022-08-09","published":"2022-05-09"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Roundcube Webmail SQL Injection","id":"CVE-2021-44026","kev_date_added":"2023-06-22","published":"2021-11-19"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"GitHub Advisory Database","prefix":"GHSA"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"none","technical_impact":"total"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-02-06","vendors":["sebastianbergmann"]},"summary":"An attacker with local file write access can achieve arbitrary code execution by placing malicious serialized data in code coverage files during PHPT test runs.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-24765/"}
