It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2026-27456 exists.\n\nAffected product: util-linux. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-27456/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-27456/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-27456","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-27456/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-27456","record":{"aliases":["ALPINE-CVE-2026-27456","AZL-81846","BELL-CVE-2026-27456","CLEANSTART-2026-ZQ21115","CLSA-2026-1782989143","DEBIAN-CVE-2026-27456","ECHO-a95f-c9f9-a568","GHSA-qq4x-vfq4-9h9g","JLSEC-2026-212","OESA-2026-2211","ROOT-OS-DEBIAN-11-CVE-2026-27456","ROOT-OS-DEBIAN-12-CVE-2026-27456","SUSE-SU-2026:1962-1","SUSE-SU-2026:21727-1","SUSE-SU-2026:21742-1","SUSE-SU-2026:22260-1","SUSE-SU-2026:22332-1","SUSE-SU-2026:2485-1","SUSE-SU-2026:2492-1","SUSE-SU-2026:2653-1","UBUNTU-CVE-2026-27456","openSUSE-SU-2026:10736-1","openSUSE-SU-2026:21028-1"],"analysis":{"component_type":"operating_system","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["data_read","privilege_escalation"],"network_reachable":"adjacent_or_local","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Linux mount utility","requires_auth":"low_privilege","summary":"Local attackers can exploit a race condition in the SUID mount binary to read root-owned files or devices by replacing source paths with symlinks.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"race_condition"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"util-linux","vendor":"kernel"}],"cvss":{"score":4.7,"severity":"medium","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-59","name":"Improper Link Resolution Before File Access"},{"id":"CWE-367","name":"Time-of-check Time-of-use (TOCTOU) Race Condition"},{"id":"CWE-269","name":"Improper Privilege Management"}],"description":"util-linux is a random collection of Linux utilities. Prior to version 2.41.4, a TOCTOU (Time-of-Check-Time-of-Use) vulnerability has been identified in the SUID binary /usr/bin/mount from util-linux. The mount binary, when setting up loop devices, validates the source file path with user privileges via fork() + setuid() + realpath(), but subsequently re-canonicalizes and opens it with root privileges (euid=0) without verifying that the path has not been replaced between both operations. Neither O_NOFOLLOW, nor inode comparison, nor post-open fstat() are employed. This allows a local unprivileged user to replace the source file with a symlink pointing to any root-owned file or device during the race window, causing the SUID binary to open and mount it as root. Exploitation requires an /etc/fstab entry with user, loop options whose path points to a directory where the attacker has write permission, and that /usr/bin/mount has the SUID bit set (the default configuration on virtually all Linux distributions). The impact is unauthorized read access to root-protected files and block devices, including backup images, disk volumes, and any file containing a valid filesystem. This issue has been patched in version 2.41.4.","ecosystems":["SUSE:Linux Enterprise Micro 5.3","SUSE:Linux Enterprise Micro 5.4","SUSE:Linux Enterprise Module for Basesystem 15 SP7","SUSE:Linux
