It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, and only if a user opens a file or follows a link.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2026-29050 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected packages and fixed versions:\n- chainguard.dev/melange (Go): affected from 0.32.0; fixed in 0.43.4\n- chainguard.dev/melange (Go): affected from 0.32.0; fixed in 0.43.4\n- chainguard.dev/melange (Go): affected from 0.32.0; fixed in 0.43.4\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-29050/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-29050/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-29050","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-29050/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-29050","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-98f2-w9h9-7fp9","GO-2026-5279"],"analysis":{"component_type":"developer_tool","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["code_execution","data_read"],"network_reachable":"adjacent_or_local","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Go package builder","requires_auth":"none","summary":"Attackers can execute arbitrary shell commands and read files by manipulating pipeline paths in melange configuration files during builds.","user_interaction":"required","vuln_class":"path_traversal"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"melange","vendor":"chainguard"}],"cvss":{"score":6.1,"severity":"medium","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-22","name":"Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory"}],"description":"melange allows users to build apk packages using declarative pipelines. Starting in version 0.32.0 and prior to version 0.43.4, an attacker who can influence a melange configuration file — for example through pull-request-driven CI or build-as-a-service scenarios — could set `pipeline[].uses` to a value containing `../` sequences or an absolute path. The `(*Compiled).compilePipeline` function in `pkg/build/compile.go` passed `uses` directly to `filepath.Join(pipelineDir, uses + \".yaml\")` without validating the value, so the resolved path could escape each `--pipeline-dir` and read an arbitrary YAML-parseable file visible to the melange process. Because the loaded file is subsequently interpreted as a melange pipeline and its `runs:` block is executed via `/bin/sh -c` in the build sandbox, this additionally allowed shell commands sourced from an out-of-tree file to run during the build, bypassing the review boundary that normally covers the in-tree pipeline definition. The issue is fixed in melange v0.43.4 via commit 5829ca4. The fix rejects `uses` values that are absolute paths or contain `..`, and verifies (via `filepath.Rel` after `filepath.Clean`) that the resolved target remains within the pipeline directory. As a workaround, only run `melange build` against configuration files from trusted sources. In CI systems that build user-supplied melange configs, gate builds behind manual review of `pipeline[].uses` values and reject any containing `..` or leading `/`.","ecosystems":["Go"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"melange has Path Traversal When Resolving External Pipelines via Unvalidated pipeline[].uses","id":"CVE-2026-29050","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":"Go","product":null,"products":[],"type":"path_traversal","year":"2026"},"n_packages":3,"n_references":1,"next":{"headline":"melange has Path Traversal via .PKGINFO in --persist-lint-results","id":"CVE-2026-29051"},"packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["0.43.4"],"introduced":["0.32.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"chainguard.dev/melange","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-98f2-w9h9-7fp9"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["0.43.4"],"introduced":["0.32.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"chainguard.dev/melange","purl":"pkg:golang/chainguard.dev/melange","source":"GHSA-98f2-w9h9-7fp9"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["0.43.4"],"introduced":["0.32.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"chainguard.dev/melange","purl":"pkg:golang/chainguard.dev/melange","source":"GO-2026-5279"}],"prev":{"headline":"melange: unbounded HTTP download in `melange update-cache` can exhaust disk in CI","id":"CVE-2026-29049"},"products":["melange"],"published":"2026-04-23","related":[{"cvss_score":8.2,"headline":"melange QEMU runner could write files outside workspace directory","id":"CVE-2026-24843","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-02-04"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"melange pipeline working-directory could allow command injection","id":"CVE-2026-24844","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-02-04"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"melange affected by potential host command execution via license-check YAML mode patch pipeline","id":"CVE-2026-25143","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-02-04"},{"cvss_score":5.5,"headline":"melange has a path traversal in license-path which allows reading files outside workspace","id":"CVE-2026-25145","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-02-04"},{"cvss_score":4.4,"headline":"melange has Path Traversal via .PKGINFO in --persist-lint-results","id":"CVE-2026-29051","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-04-24"},{"cvss_score":4.3,"headline":"melange: unbounded HTTP download in `melange update-cache` can exhaust disk in CI","id":"CVE-2026-29049","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-03-06"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"GitHub Advisory Database","prefix":"GHSA"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"Go Vulnerability Database","prefix":"GO"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"none","technical_impact":"partial"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-04-25","vendors":["chainguard-dev"]},"summary":"Attackers can execute arbitrary shell commands and read files by manipulating pipeline paths in melange configuration files during builds.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-29050/"}
