An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2026-30871 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: Openwrt Openwrt. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-30871/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-30871/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-30871","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-30871/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-30871","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-7c3j-f7w2-p8f6"],"analysis":{"component_type":"operating_system","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["code_execution","denial_of_service"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"OpenWrt embedded OS","requires_auth":"none","summary":"A stack-based buffer overflow in OpenWrt's mdns daemon allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause denial of service via crafted DNS PTR queries.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"memory_corruption"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"openwrt","vendor":"openwrt"}],"cvss":{"score":9.5,"severity":"critical","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:H/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:H/SI:H/SA:H","version":"4.0"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-121","name":"Stack-based Buffer Overflow"}],"description":"OpenWrt Project is a Linux operating system targeting embedded devices. In versions prior to 24.10.6 and 25.12.1, the mdns daemon has a Stack-based Buffer Overflow vulnerability in the parse_question function. The issue is  triggered by PTR queries for reverse DNS domains (.in-addr.arpa and .ip6.arpa). DNS packets received on UDP port 5353 are expanded by dn_expand into an 8096-byte global buffer (name_buffer), which is then copied via an unbounded strcpy into a fixed 256-byte stack buffer when handling TYPE_PTR queries. The overflow is possible because dn_expand converts non-printable ASCII bytes (e.g., 0x01) into multi-character octal representations (e.g., \\001), significantly inflating the expanded name beyond the stack buffer's capacity. A crafted DNS packet can exploit this expansion behavior to overflow the stack buffer, making the vulnerability reachable through normal multicast DNS packet processing. This issue has been fixed in versions 24.10.6 and 25.12.1.","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":false,"headline":"OpenWrt Project has Stack-based Buffer Overflow in DNS PTR Query","id":"CVE-2026-30871","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":"openwrt:openwrt","products":["openwrt:openwrt"],"type":"memory_corruption","year":"2026"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":3,"next":{"headline":"OpenWrt Project has a Stack-based Buffer Overflow vulnerability via IPv6 reverse DNS lookup","id":"CVE-2026-30872"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"Some sync filters in PowerSync Service ignored using `config.edition: 3`","id":"CVE-2026-30870"},"products":["openwrt"],"published":"2026-03-19","related":[{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Use after free in n/a","id":"CVE-2020-28951","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2020-11-19"},{"cvss_score":9.6,"headline":"Cross-site scripting in openwrt","id":"CVE-2026-62948","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-07-15"},{"cvss_score":9.5,"headline":"OpenWrt Project has a Stack-based Buffer Overflow vulnerability via IPv6 reverse DNS lookup","id":"CVE-2026-30872","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-03-19"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Command injection in n/a","id":"CVE-2021-28961","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2021-03-21"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Cross-site request forgery in n/a","id":"CVE-2019-17367","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2019-10-18"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Missing authorization in n/a","id":"CVE-2018-11116","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2018-06-19"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"yes","exploitation":"none","technical_impact":"total"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-03-25","vendors":["openwrt"]},"summary":"A stack-based buffer overflow in OpenWrt's mdns daemon allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause denial of service via crafted DNS PTR queries.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-30871/"}
