An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2026-30872 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: Openwrt Openwrt. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-30872/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-30872/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-30872","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-30872/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-30872","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-mpgh-v658-jqv5"],"analysis":{"component_type":"operating_system","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["code_execution"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"OpenWrt embedded OS","requires_auth":"none","summary":"A stack-based buffer overflow in the mdns daemon allows remote code execution via crafted IPv6 reverse DNS queries.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"memory_corruption"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"openwrt","vendor":"openwrt"}],"cvss":{"score":9.5,"severity":"critical","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:H/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:H/SI:H/SA:H","version":"4.0"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-121","name":"Stack-based Buffer Overflow"}],"description":"OpenWrt Project is a Linux operating system targeting embedded devices. In versions prior to 24.10.6 and 25.12.1, the mdns daemon has a Stack-based Buffer Overflow vulnerability in the match_ipv6_addresses function, triggered when processing PTR queries for IPv6 reverse DNS domains (.ip6.arpa) received via multicast DNS on UDP port 5353. During processing, the domain name from name_buffer is copied via strcpy into a fixed 256-byte stack buffer, and then the reverse IPv6 request is extracted into a buffer of only 46 bytes (INET6_ADDRSTRLEN). Because the length of the data is never validated before this extraction, an attacker can supply input larger than 46 bytes, causing an out-of-bounds write. This allows a specially crafted DNS query to overflow the stack buffer in match_ipv6_addresses, potentially enabling remote code execution. This issue has been fixed in versions 24.10.6 and 25.12.1.","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":false,"headline":"OpenWrt Project has a Stack-based Buffer Overflow vulnerability via IPv6 reverse DNS lookup","id":"CVE-2026-30872","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":"openwrt:openwrt","products":["openwrt:openwrt"],"type":"memory_corruption","year":"2026"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":3,"next":{"headline":"OpenWrt Project jsonpath: Memory leak when processing strings, labels, and regexp tokens","id":"CVE-2026-30873"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"OpenWrt Project has Stack-based Buffer Overflow in DNS PTR Query","id":"CVE-2026-30871"},"products":["openwrt"],"published":"2026-03-19","related":[{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Use after free in n/a","id":"CVE-2020-28951","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2020-11-19"},{"cvss_score":9.6,"headline":"Cross-site scripting in openwrt","id":"CVE-2026-62948","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-07-15"},{"cvss_score":9.5,"headline":"OpenWrt Project has Stack-based Buffer Overflow in DNS PTR Query","id":"CVE-2026-30871","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-03-19"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Command injection in n/a","id":"CVE-2021-28961","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2021-03-21"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Cross-site request forgery in n/a","id":"CVE-2019-17367","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2019-10-18"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Missing authorization in n/a","id":"CVE-2018-11116","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2018-06-19"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"yes","exploitation":"none","technical_impact":"total"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-03-25","vendors":["openwrt"]},"summary":"A stack-based buffer overflow in the mdns daemon allows remote code execution via crafted IPv6 reverse DNS queries.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-30872/"}
