## What is CVE-2026-31431?

CVE-2026-31431 is a high-severity vulnerability in Canonical Ubuntu Linux, published on 22 Apr 2026. It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.

### Official description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

crypto: algif_aead - Revert to operating out-of-place

This mostly reverts commit 72548b093ee3 except for the copying of
the associated data.

There is no benefit in operating in-place in algif_aead since the
source and destination come from different mappings. Get rid of
all the complexity added for in-place operation and just copy the
AD directly.

Weakness: CWE-1288 (Improper Validation of Consistency within Input), CWE-669 (Incorrect Resource Transfer Between Spheres)

## How do I fix CVE-2026-31431?

Apply the vendor's patch. US federal agencies must fix it by 15 May 2026.

## Is CVE-2026-31431 being exploited?

Yes. Attackers have exploited CVE-2026-31431 in the wild since at least 1 May 2026.

Public exploit code:

- Copy Fail (CVE-2026-31431): 9-year-old Linux kernel LPE found by Theori's Xint Code (github_poc): https://github.com/theori-io/copy-fail-CVE-2026-31431

- PoC: fully unprivileged container escape to node-level code execution on Kubernetes via CVE-2026-31431 page-cache corruption + shared image layers. Validated on Alibaba Cloud ACK, Amazon EKS and Google GKE. (github_poc): https://github.com/Percivalll/Copy-Fail-CVE-2026-31431-Kubernetes-PoC
- CVE-2026-31431 纯文件利用 (github_poc): https://github.com/Sndav/CVE-2026-31431-Advanced-Exploit
- Most Linux LPEs need a race window or a kernel-specific offset. Copy Fail is a straight-line logic flaw, it needs neither. The same 732-byte Python script (or .c elf) roots every Linux distribution shipped since 2017. (github_poc): https://github.com/painoob/Copy-Fail-Exploit-CVE-2026-31431

## Fix prompt for AI coding agents

```text
Check this codebase for CVE-2026-31431 and fix it if it is affected.
What it is: CVE-2026-31431 is a high-severity vulnerability in Canonical Ubuntu Linux, published on 22 Apr 2026. It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.
Exploitation: Yes. Attackers have exploited CVE-2026-31431 in the wild since at least 1 May 2026.
Affected product: Canonical Ubuntu Linux. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.
Task:
1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.
2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.
3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.
4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.
5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.
