Any signed-in user can exploit it over the network, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2026-40197 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected packages and fixed versions:\n- github.com/lxc/incus/v6/cmd/incusd (Go): affected all versions; fixed in 7.0.0\n- github.com/lxc/incus/v6/cmd/incusd (Go): affected all versions; fixed in 7.0.0\n- github.com/lxc/incus (Go): affected all versions; no fix listed\n- github.com/lxc/incus/v6 (Go): affected all versions; no fix listed\n- github.com/lxc/incus/v7 (Go): affected all versions; fixed in 7.0.0\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-40197/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-40197/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-40197","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-40197/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-40197","record":{"aliases":["DEBIAN-CVE-2026-40197","GHSA-r7w7-mmxr-47r9","GO-2026-5612","UBUNTU-CVE-2026-40197"],"analysis":{"component_type":"server_software","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["denial_of_service"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Incus container manager","requires_auth":"low_privilege","summary":"An authenticated user can crash the Incus daemon by importing a malicious backup archive with null snapshot entries, causing denial of service.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"null_dereference"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"incus","vendor":"linuxcontainers"}],"cvss":{"score":7.1,"severity":"high","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N","version":"4.0"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-476","name":"NULL Pointer Dereference"}],"description":"Incus is a system container and virtual machine manager. In versions before 7.0.0, missing validation logic in the storage volume import logic allows an authenticated user with access to the storage volume feature to cause the Incus daemon to crash. The custom volume backup import subsystem contains a nil-pointer dereference vulnerability during import operations. In the snapshot import loop, the daemon iterates over entries from `srcBackup.Config.VolumeSnapshots` and assumes that each slice element is initialized, then dereferences fields such as `Name`, `Config`, `Description`, `CreatedAt`, and `ExpiresAt` without first validating the element itself. Because the yaml unmarshaler accepts explicit null array elements from an attacker-controlled index.yaml and converts them into nil pointers inside the slice, an attacker can supply a backup archive containing a null entry in the volume_snapshots array. This causes a nil-pointer dereference during custom volume import and terminates the daemon, resulting in denial of service on the affected node. Repeated use of this issue can be used to keep Incus offline, causing a denial of service. This issue is fixed in version 7.0.0.","ecosystems":["Go"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"Incus nil-pointer dereference in custom volume import allows denial of service","id":"CVE-2026-40197","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":"Go","product":null,"products":[],"type":"null_dereference","year":"2026"},"n_packages":5,"n_references":1,"next":{"headline":"Net::CIDR::Lite versions before 0.23 for Perl does not validate IPv6 group count, which may allow IP ACL bypass","id":"CVE-2026-40198"},"packages":[{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":[],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/lxc/incus","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/lxc/incus","source":"GO-2026-5612"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":[],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/lxc/incus/v6","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/lxc/incus/v6","source":"GO-2026-5612"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["7.0.0"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/lxc/incus/v6/cmd/incusd","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-r7w7-mmxr-47r9"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["7.0.0"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/lxc/incus/v6/cmd/incusd","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/lxc/incus/v6/cmd/incusd","source":"GHSA-r7w7-mmxr-47r9"},{"ecosystem":"Go","fixed":["7.0.0"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"github.com/lxc/incus/v7","purl":"pkg:golang/github.com/lxc/incus/v7","source":"GO-2026-5612"}],"prev":{"headline":"HomeBox has Unauthorized API Access via Retained defaultGroup ID After Group Access Revocation","id":"CVE-2026-40196"},"products":["incus"],"published":"2026-05-06","related":[{"cvss_score":10,"headline":"Incus vulnerable to arbitrary file read and write through pongo templates","id":"CVE-2026-33897","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-03-26"},{"cvss_score":10,"headline":"Abitrary file write through systemd-creds option","id":"CVE-2026-33945","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-03-26"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Local Incus UI web server vulnerable to nuthentication bypass","id":"CVE-2026-33898","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-03-26"},{"cvss_score":8.7,"headline":"Incus container environment configuration newline injection","id":"CVE-2026-23953","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-01-22"},{"cvss_score":8.7,"headline":"Incus container image templating arbitrary host file read and write","id":"CVE-2026-23954","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-01-22"},{"cvss_score":8.6,"headline":"Incus vulnerable to local privilege escalation through custom storage volumes","id":"CVE-2025-64507","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2025-11-10"},{"cvss_score":7.1,"headline":"Incus nil-pointer dereference in storage bucket import allows denial of service","id":"CVE-2026-40195","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-05-06"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"GitHub Advisory Database","prefix":"GHSA"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"Go Vulnerability Database","prefix":"GO"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"none","technical_impact":"partial"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-05-07","vendors":["lxc"]},"summary":"An authenticated user can crash the Incus daemon by importing a malicious backup archive with null snapshot entries, causing denial of service.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-40197/"}
