## What is CVE-2026-42579?

CVE-2026-42579 is a high-severity vulnerability in Netty Netty, published on 13 May 2026.

### Official description

Netty is an asynchronous, event-driven network application framework. Prior to 4.2.13.Final and 4.1.133.Final, Netty's DNS codec does not enforce RFC 1035 domain name constraints during either encoding or decoding. This creates a bidirectional attack surface: malicious DNS responses can exploit the decoder, and user-influenced hostnames can exploit the encoder. This vulnerability is fixed in 4.2.13.Final and 4.1.133.Final.

Weakness: CWE-1286 (Improper Validation of Syntactic Correctness of Input), CWE-626 (Null Byte Interaction Error (Poison Null Byte)), CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption), CWE-20 (Improper Input Validation)

## Which versions are affected by CVE-2026-42579?

4 open source packages ship an affected version, including io.netty:netty-codec-dns. It affects 1 product.

| Package | Ecosystem | Affected | Fixed in |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `io.netty:netty-codec-dns` | Maven | All versions | 4.1.133.Final |
| `io.netty:netty-codec-dns` | Maven | All versions | 4.1.133.Final |
| `io.netty:netty-codec-dns` | Maven | From 4.2.0.Alpha1 | 4.2.13.Final |
| `io.netty:netty-codec-dns` | Maven | From 4.2.0.Alpha1 | 4.2.13.Final |

Products: Netty Netty.

## How do I fix CVE-2026-42579?

Upgrade io.netty:netty-codec-dns to a fixed version for your release line: 4.1.133.Final or 4.2.13.Final.

## Is CVE-2026-42579 being exploited?

It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2026-42579 exists.

## Fix prompt for AI coding agents

```text
Check this codebase for CVE-2026-42579 and fix it if it is affected.
What it is: CVE-2026-42579 is a high-severity vulnerability in Netty Netty, published on 13 May 2026.
Exploitation: It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2026-42579 exists.
Affected packages and fixed versions:
- io.netty:netty-codec-dns (Maven): affected all versions; fixed in 4.1.133.Final
- io.netty:netty-codec-dns (Maven): affected all versions; fixed in 4.1.133.Final
- io.netty:netty-codec-dns (Maven): affected from 4.2.0.Alpha1; fixed in 4.2.13.Final
- io.netty:netty-codec-dns (Maven): affected from 4.2.0.Alpha1; fixed in 4.2.13.Final
Task:
1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.
2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.
3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.
4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.
5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.
