It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2026-43053 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: Linux kernel. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-43053/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-43053/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-43053","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-43053/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-43053","record":{"aliases":["AZL-85347","BELL-CVE-2026-43053","DEBIAN-CVE-2026-43053","GHSA-37p6-c4xv-cq5q","ROOT-OS-DEBIAN-11-CVE-2026-43053","ROOT-OS-DEBIAN-12-CVE-2026-43053","ROOT-OS-DEBIAN-13-CVE-2026-43053","ROOT-OS-UBUNTU-2204-CVE-2026-43053","ROOT-OS-UBUNTU-2404-CVE-2026-43053","UBUNTU-CVE-2026-43053"],"analysis":{"component_type":"kernel","fix_type":"patch","impacts":["denial_of_service"],"network_reachable":"adjacent_or_local","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Linux kernel XFS","requires_auth":"low_privilege","summary":"A race condition in XFS inode inactivation can cause metadata corruption and filesystem crashes after a log shutdown, requiring repair.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"race_condition"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"Linux","cpe":[{"product":"linux_kernel","vendor":"linux"}],"cvss":{"score":4.7,"severity":"medium","source":"nvd","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-367","name":"Time-of-check Time-of-use (TOCTOU) Race Condition"}],"description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nxfs: close crash window in attr dabtree inactivation\n\nWhen inactivating an inode with node-format extended attributes,\nxfs_attr3_node_inactive() invalidates all child leaf/node blocks via\nxfs_trans_binval(), but intentionally does not remove the corresponding\nentries from their parent node blocks.  The implicit assumption is that\nxfs_attr_inactive() will truncate the entire attr fork to zero extents\nafterwards, so log recovery will never reach the root node and follow\nthose stale pointers.\n\nHowever, if a log shutdown occurs after the leaf/node block cancellations\ncommit but before the attr bmap truncation commits, this assumption\nbreaks.  Recovery replays the attr bmap intact (the inode still has\nattr fork extents), but suppresses replay of all cancelled leaf/node\nblocks, maybe leaving them as stale data on disk.  On the next mount,\nxlog_recover_process_iunlinks() retries inactivation and attempts to\nread the root node via the attr bmap. If the root node was not replayed,\nreading the unreplayed root block triggers a metadata verification\nfailure immediately; if it was replayed, following its child pointers\nto unreplayed child blocks triggers the same failure:\n\n XFS (pmem0): Metadata corruption detected at\n xfs_da3_node_read_verify+0x53/0x220, xfs_da3_node block 0x78\n XFS (pmem0): Unmount and run xfs_repair\n XFS (pmem0): First 128 bytes of corrupted metadata buffer:\n 00000000: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  ................\n 00000010: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  ................\n 00000020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  ................\n 00000030: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  ................\n 00000040: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  ................\n 00000050: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  ................\n 00000060: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  ................\n 00000070: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  ................\n XFS (pmem0): metadata I/O error in \"xfs_da_read_buf+0x104/0x190\" at daddr 0x78 len 8 error 117\n\nFix this in two places:\n\nIn xfs_attr3_node_inactive(), after calling xfs_trans_binval() on a\nchild block, immediately remove the entry that references it from the\nparent node in the same transaction.  This eliminates the window where\nthe parent holds a pointer to a cancelled block.  Once all children are\nremoved, the now-empty root node is converted to a leaf block within the\nsame transaction. This node-to-leaf conversion is necessary for crash\nsafety. If the system shutdown after the empty node is written to the\nlog but before the second-phase bmap truncation commits, log recovery\nwill attempt to verify the root block on disk. xfs_da3_node_verify()\ndoes not permit a node block with count == 0; such a block will fail\nverification and trigger a metadata corruption shutdown. on the other\nhand, leaf blocks are allowed to have this transient state.\n\nIn xfs_attr_inactive(), split the attr fork truncation into two explicit\nphases.  First, truncate all extents beyond the root block (the child\nextents whose parent references have already been removed above).\nSecond, invalidate the root block and truncate the attr bmap to zero in\na single transaction.  The two operations in the second phase must be\natomic: as long as the attr bmap has any non-zero length, recovery can\nfollow it to the root block, so the root block invalidation must commit\ntogether with the bmap-to-zero truncation.","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"xfs: close crash window in attr dabtree inactivation","id":"CVE-2026-43053","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":"linux:linux_kernel","products":["linux:linux_kernel"],"type":"race_condition","year":"2026"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":4,"next":{"headline":"scsi: target: tcm_loop: Drain commands in target_reset handler","id":"CVE-2026-43054"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"wifi: mac80211: check tdls flag in ieee80211_tdls_oper","id":"CVE-2026-43052"},"products":["Linux"],"published":"2026-05-01","related":[{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Out-of-Bounds Write","id":"CVE-2026-53266","kev_date_added":"2026-09-18","published":"2026-06-25"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Improper Input Validation","id":"CVE-2013-6282","kev_date_added":"2022-09-15","published":"2013-11-19"},{"cvss_score":8.4,"headline":"Linux Kernel Heap-Based Buffer Overflow","id":"CVE-2022-0185","kev_date_added":"2024-08-21","published":"2022-02-11"},{"cvss_score":8.4,"headline":"Linux Kernel Privilege Escalation","id":"CVE-2013-2094","kev_date_added":"2022-09-15","published":"2013-05-14"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Unspecified","id":"CVE-2026-53362","kev_date_added":"2026-08-27","published":"2026-07-04"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Missing Initialization of a Variable","id":"CVE-2026-46300","kev_date_added":"2026-10-28","published":"2026-05-23"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Race Condition","id":"CVE-2025-39964","kev_date_added":"2026-09-18","published":"2025-10-13"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":null,"exploitation":null,"technical_impact":null},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-10-21","vendors":["Linux"]},"summary":"A race condition in XFS inode inactivation can cause metadata corruption and filesystem crashes after a log shutdown, requiring repair.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-43053/"}
