It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2026-43456 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: Linux kernel. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-43456/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-43456/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-43456","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-43456/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-43456","record":{"aliases":["AZL-86169","BELL-CVE-2026-43456","DEBIAN-CVE-2026-43456","GHSA-mr89-jg5f-6pqv","ROOT-OS-DEBIAN-11-CVE-2026-43456","ROOT-OS-DEBIAN-12-CVE-2026-43456","ROOT-OS-UBUNTU-2204-CVE-2026-43456","ROOT-OS-UBUNTU-2404-CVE-2026-43456","UBUNTU-CVE-2026-43456"],"analysis":{"component_type":"kernel","fix_type":"patch","impacts":["denial_of_service"],"network_reachable":"adjacent_or_local","non_default_config":true,"product_category":"Linux kernel bonding","requires_auth":"low_privilege","summary":"A type confusion in the Linux kernel bonding driver causes a kernel crash when a non-Ethernet device is enslaved to a bond.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"memory_corruption"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"Linux","cpe":[{"product":"linux_kernel","vendor":"linux"}],"cvss":{"score":7.8,"severity":"high","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-908","name":"Use of Uninitialized Resource"},{"id":"CWE-843","name":"Access of Resource Using Incompatible Type"}],"description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nbonding: fix type confusion in bond_setup_by_slave()\n\nkernel BUG at net/core/skbuff.c:2306!\nOops: invalid opcode: 0000 [#1] SMP KASAN NOPTI\nRIP: 0010:pskb_expand_head+0xa08/0xfe0 net/core/skbuff.c:2306\nRSP: 0018:ffffc90004aff760 EFLAGS: 00010293\nRAX: 0000000000000000 RBX: ffff88807e3c8780 RCX: ffffffff89593e0e\nRDX: ffff88807b7c4900 RSI: ffffffff89594747 RDI: ffff88807b7c4900\nRBP: 0000000000000820 R08: 0000000000000005 R09: 0000000000000000\nR10: 00000000961a63e0 R11: 0000000000000000 R12: ffff88807e3c8780\nR13: 00000000961a6560 R14: dffffc0000000000 R15: 00000000961a63e0\nCS:  0010 DS: 0000 ES: 0000 CR0: 0000000080050033\nCR2: 00007fe1a0ed8df0 CR3: 000000002d816000 CR4: 00000000003526f0\nCall Trace:\n \u003cTASK\u003e\n ipgre_header+0xdd/0x540 net/ipv4/ip_gre.c:900\n dev_hard_header include/linux/netdevice.h:3439 [inline]\n packet_snd net/packet/af_packet.c:3028 [inline]\n packet_sendmsg+0x3ae5/0x53c0 net/packet/af_packet.c:3108\n sock_sendmsg_nosec net/socket.c:727 [inline]\n __sock_sendmsg net/socket.c:742 [inline]\n ____sys_sendmsg+0xa54/0xc30 net/socket.c:2592\n ___sys_sendmsg+0x190/0x1e0 net/socket.c:2646\n __sys_sendmsg+0x170/0x220 net/socket.c:2678\n do_syscall_x64 arch/x86/entry/syscall_64.c:63 [inline]\n do_syscall_64+0x106/0xf80 arch/x86/entry/syscall_64.c:94\n entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x77/0x7f\nRIP: 0033:0x7fe1a0e6c1a9\n\nWhen a non-Ethernet device (e.g. GRE tunnel) is enslaved to a bond,\nbond_setup_by_slave() directly copies the slave's header_ops to the\nbond device:\n\n    bond_dev-\u003eheader_ops = slave_dev-\u003eheader_ops;\n\nThis causes a type confusion when dev_hard_header() is later called\non the bond device. Functions like ipgre_header(), ip6gre_header(),all use\nnetdev_priv(dev) to access their device-specific private data. When\ncalled with the bond device, netdev_priv() returns the bond's private\ndata (struct bonding) instead of the expected type (e.g. struct\nip_tunnel), leading to garbage values being read and kernel crashes.\n\nFix this by introducing bond_header_ops with wrapper functions that\ndelegate to the active slave's header_ops using the slave's own\ndevice. This ensures netdev_priv() in the slave's header functions\nalways receives the correct device.\n\nThe fix is placed in the bonding driver rather than individual device\ndrivers, as the root cause is bond blindly inheriting header_ops from\nthe slave without considering that these callbacks expect a specific\nnetdev_priv() layout.\n\nThe type confusion can be observed by adding a printk in\nipgre_header() and running the following commands:\n\n    ip link add dummy0 type dummy\n    ip addr add 10.0.0.1/24 dev dummy0\n    ip link set dummy0 up\n    ip link add gre1 type gre local 10.0.0.1\n    ip link add bond1 type bond mode active-backup\n    ip link set gre1 master bond1\n    ip link set gre1 up\n    ip link set bond1 up\n    ip addr add fe80::1/64 dev bond1","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"bonding: fix type confusion in bond_setup_by_slave()","id":"CVE-2026-43456","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":"linux:linux_kernel","products":["linux:linux_kernel"],"type":"memory_corruption","year":"2026"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":5,"next":{"headline":"mctp: i2c: fix skb memory leak in receive path","id":"CVE-2026-43457"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"mctp: route: hold key-\u003elock in mctp_flow_prepare_output()","id":"CVE-2026-43455"},"products":["Linux"],"published":"2026-05-08","related":[{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Out-of-Bounds Write","id":"CVE-2026-53266","kev_date_added":"2026-09-18","published":"2026-06-25"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Improper Input Validation","id":"CVE-2013-6282","kev_date_added":"2022-09-15","published":"2013-11-19"},{"cvss_score":8.4,"headline":"Linux Kernel Heap-Based Buffer Overflow","id":"CVE-2022-0185","kev_date_added":"2024-08-21","published":"2022-02-11"},{"cvss_score":8.4,"headline":"Linux Kernel Privilege Escalation","id":"CVE-2013-2094","kev_date_added":"2022-09-15","published":"2013-05-14"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Unspecified","id":"CVE-2026-53362","kev_date_added":"2026-08-27","published":"2026-07-04"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Missing Initialization of a Variable","id":"CVE-2026-46300","kev_date_added":"2026-10-28","published":"2026-05-23"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Race Condition","id":"CVE-2025-39964","kev_date_added":"2026-09-18","published":"2025-10-13"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"none","technical_impact":"total"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-10-19","vendors":["Linux"]},"summary":"A type confusion in the Linux kernel bonding driver causes a kernel crash when a non-Ethernet device is enslaved to a bond.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-43456/"}
