An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, and only if a user opens a file or follows a link.\nExploitation: It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2026-44587 exists.\n\nAffected packages and fixed versions:\n- carrierwave (RubyGems): affected all versions; fixed in 2.2.7\n- carrierwave (RubyGems): affected all versions; fixed in 2.2.7\n- carrierwave (RubyGems): affected from 3.0.0.beta; fixed in 3.1.3\n- carrierwave (RubyGems): affected from 3.0.0.beta; fixed in 3.1.3\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-44587/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-44587/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-44587","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-44587/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-44587","record":{"aliases":["DEBIAN-CVE-2026-44587","GHSA-7g26-2qgj-chfg","UBUNTU-CVE-2026-44587"],"analysis":{"component_type":"library","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["code_execution","security_bypass"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Ruby file upload library","requires_auth":"none","summary":"Attackers can bypass content type denylists to upload malicious SVG files, leading to stored XSS in applications using CarrierWave.","user_interaction":"required","vuln_class":"file_upload"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"carrierwave","vendor":"carrierwave_project"}],"cvss":{"score":4.7,"severity":"medium","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:N/A:N","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-79","name":"Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation"},{"id":"CWE-625","name":"Permissive Regular Expression"},{"id":"CWE-184","name":"Incomplete List of Disallowed Inputs"}],"description":"CarrierWave is a framework to upload files from Ruby applications. In versions prior to 2.2.7 and 3.1.3, the content_type_denylist check fails to escape regex metacharacters in string entries, causing the denylist to silently not match the content types it is intended to block. In lib/carrierwave/uploader/content_type_denylist.rb:57, denylist entries are interpolated directly into a regex without Regexp.quote or anchoring, so an entry such as image/svg+xml becomes the pattern /image\\/svg+xml/, in which + is treated as a quantifier rather than a literal character and therefore never matches the real MIME type image/svg+xml. This is inconsistent with the allowlist implementation, which correctly applies both Regexp.quote and a \\A anchor. Other content types containing regex metacharacters, such as application/xhtml+xml, are affected as well. As a result, any application that relies on content_type_denylist to block image/svg+xml, most commonly to prevent stored XSS, is silently unprotected. An attacker can upload an SVG file containing arbitrary JavaScript; if the application serves that SVG inline from its own origin, the script executes in the victim's browser, resulting in stored XSS. This issue has been fixed in versions 2.2.7 and 3.1.3.","ecosystems":["RubyGems"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"weaponised"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"CarrierWave has a denylisted_content_type bypass via Unescaped Regex Metacharacters","id":"CVE-2026-44587","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":"RubyGems","product":null,"products":[],"type":"file_upload","year":"2026"},"n_packages":4,"n_references":3,"next":{"headline":"SiYuan: URL-encoded title bypasses `escapeAriaLabel`, decoded by `decodeURIComponent` into a tooltip-XSS","id":"CVE-2026-44588"},"packages":[{"ecosystem":"RubyGems","fixed":["2.2.7"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"carrierwave","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-7g26-2qgj-chfg"},{"ecosystem":"RubyGems","fixed":["2.2.7"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"carrierwave","purl":"pkg:gem/carrierwave","source":"GHSA-7g26-2qgj-chfg"},{"ecosystem":"RubyGems","fixed":["3.1.3"],"introduced":["3.0.0.beta"],"last_affected":[],"package":"carrierwave","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-7g26-2qgj-chfg"},{"ecosystem":"RubyGems","fixed":["3.1.3"],"introduced":["3.0.0.beta"],"last_affected":[],"package":"carrierwave","purl":"pkg:gem/carrierwave","source":"GHSA-7g26-2qgj-chfg"}],"prev":{"headline":"SiYuan: Bazaar marketplace renders unescaped package author metadata, allowing XSS and Electron code execution","id":"CVE-2026-44586"},"products":["carrierwave"],"published":"2026-06-16","related":[{"cvss_score":7.4,"headline":"Code Injection vulnerability in CarrierWave","id":"CVE-2021-21305","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2021-02-08"},{"cvss_score":6.8,"headline":"CarrierWave's Content-Type allowlist bypass vulnerability which possibly leads to XSS remained","id":"CVE-2024-29034","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2024-03-24"},{"cvss_score":6.8,"headline":"CarrierWave has a content-type allowlist bypass vulnerability, possibly leading to XSS","id":"CVE-2023-49090","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2023-11-29"},{"cvss_score":4.3,"headline":"Server-side request forgery in CarrierWave","id":"CVE-2021-21288","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2021-02-08"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"GitHub Advisory Database","prefix":"GHSA"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"poc","technical_impact":"partial"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-06-17","vendors":["carrierwaveuploader"]},"summary":"Attackers can bypass content type denylists to upload malicious SVG files, leading to stored XSS in applications using CarrierWave.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-44587/"}
