An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, and only if a user opens a file or follows a link.\nExploitation: It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2026-48095 exists.\n\nAffected product: mcmilk 7-Zip. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-48095/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-48095/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-48095","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-48095/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-48095","record":{"aliases":["ALPINE-CVE-2026-48095","DEBIAN-CVE-2026-48095","ECHO-4f58-a58d-8e80","MGASA-2026-0238","MINI-38ph-r5x6-2gv7","UBUNTU-CVE-2026-48095","openSUSE-SU-2026:10942-1"],"analysis":{"component_type":"desktop_application","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["code_execution","denial_of_service"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"7-Zip archiver","requires_auth":"none","summary":"A heap buffer overflow in 7-Zip's NTFS handler allows attackers to execute arbitrary code or crash the application via a crafted image file.","user_interaction":"required","vuln_class":"memory_corruption"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[{"product":"7-zip","vendor":"7-zip"}],"cvss":{"score":8.8,"severity":"high","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-787","name":"Out-of-bounds Write"},{"id":"CWE-190","name":"Integer Overflow or Wraparound"}],"description":"7-Zip is a file archiver with a high compression ratio. Versions 26.00 and prior contain a heap buffer overflow vulnerability caused by an under-allocation in the NTFS compressed stream buffer (GetCuSize shift UB), potentially allowing attackers to cause arbitrary code execution or application crashes. CInStream::GetCuSize() in the NTFS handler computes the compression-unit buffer size as (UInt32)1 \u003c\u003c (BlockSizeLog + CompressionUnit), and a crafted image with ClusterSizeLog \u003e= 28 and CompressionUnit == 4 drives the exponent to 32, which is undefined behavior and collapses on x86/x64 so _inBuf is allocated as 1 byte. ReadStream_FALSE then writes up to 256 MB of attacker-controlled data into that 1-byte buffer in 64 KB iterations, and because the CInStream object sits only 304 bytes after _inBuf, its vtable pointer is overwritten and the next dispatched call achieves a vtable hijack. On 32-bit builds the overflow is unconditionally reached; on 64-bit it requires the parallel 8 GB _outBuf allocation to succeed, otherwise failing closed to denial of service. The NTFS handler is enabled by default in stock 7z.dll and, via signature-based fallback matching \"NTFS    \" at offset 3, will open a crafted image regardless of file extension during extraction or testing. Version 26.01 fixes the issue.","ecosystems":["openSUSE:Tumbleweed"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":"2026-05-26","github_poc":1,"max_poc_stars":3,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[{"date":"2026-05-26T08:21:04Z","kind":"github_poc","ref":"https://github.com/HORKimhab/CVE-2026-48095","stars":3,"title":"CVE-2026-48095"}],"tier":"weaponised"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"GHSL-2026-140_7-Zip: 7-Zip has a heap buffer overflow via NTFS compressed stream buffer under-allocation","id":"CVE-2026-48095","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":null,"products":[],"type":"memory_corruption","year":"2026"},"n_packages":1,"n_references":2,"next":{"headline":"OpenFGA has cache-key delimiter injection in shared-iterator and v2 iterator that caches enables intra-store authorization-decision poisoning","id":"CVE-2026-48096"},"packages":[{"ecosystem":"openSUSE:Tumbleweed","fixed":["26.01-1.1"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"7zip","purl":"pkg:rpm/opensuse/7zip\u0026distro=openSUSE%20Tumbleweed","source":"openSUSE-SU-2026:10942-1"}],"prev":{"headline":"ShareOpenly has Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) via Missing esc_url() on Shared URL in Content Output","id":"CVE-2026-48094"},"products":["7-Zip"],"published":"2026-06-05","related":[{"cvss_score":7,"headline":"7-Zip Mark of the Web Bypass","id":"CVE-2025-0411","kev_date_added":"2025-02-06","published":"2025-01-25"},{"cvss_score":10,"headline":"Other in n/a","id":"CVE-2008-6536","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2009-03-30"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Privilege escalation in n/a","id":"CVE-2018-10172","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2018-04-16"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Memory corruption in n/a","id":"CVE-2016-2335","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2016-06-07"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"7-Zip Zstandard Decompression Integer Underflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability","id":"CVE-2024-11477","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2024-11-22"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"7-Zip SquashFS File Parsing Out-Of-Bounds Write Remote Code Execution Vulnerability","id":"CVE-2023-40481","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2024-05-03"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"SUSE","prefix":"openSUSE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"},{"class":"open","licence":"CC0","name":"PoC-in-GitHub"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"poc","technical_impact":"total"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-06-08","vendors":["mcmilk"]},"summary":"A heap buffer overflow in 7-Zip's NTFS handler allows attackers to execute arbitrary code or crash the application via a crafted image file.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-48095/"}
