It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2026-53155 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: Linux kernel. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-53155/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-53155/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-53155","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-53155/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-53155","record":{"aliases":["DEBIAN-CVE-2026-53155","GHSA-7xgx-c4jr-vfq9","UBUNTU-CVE-2026-53155"],"analysis":{"component_type":"kernel","fix_type":"patch","impacts":["denial_of_service","privilege_escalation"],"network_reachable":"adjacent_or_local","non_default_config":true,"product_category":"Linux kernel","requires_auth":"low_privilege","summary":"Incorrect flag handling in Linux kernel huge memory management can corrupt reverse mapping state, potentially leading to system crashes or privilege escalation.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"memory_corruption"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"Linux","cpe":[{"product":"linux_kernel","vendor":"linux"}],"cvss":{"score":5.5,"severity":"medium","source":"nvd","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[],"description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nmm/huge_memory: use correct flags for device private PMD entry\n\nCommit 65edfda6f3f2 (\"mm/rmap: extend rmap and migration support\ndevice-private entries\") updated set_pmd_migration_entry() to use\npmdp_huge_get_and_clear() in the softleaf case, but made no further\nadjustments to the function itself.\n\nTherefore this function continues to incorrectly use pmd_write(),\npmd_soft_dirty() and pmd_uffd_wp() to determine whether the installed\nmigration entry should be marked writable, softdirty or uffd-wp\nrespectively.\n\nWhilst all are incorrect, the most problematic of these is pmd_write(), as\nthis can lead to corrupted rmap state.\n\nOn x86-64 _PAGE_SWP_SOFT_DIRTY is aliased to _PAGE_RW.  So calling\npmd_write() on a softleaf will return the softdirty state encoded in the\nentry, assuming CONFIG_MEM_SOFT_DIRTY was enabled.\n\nThis was observed when running the hmm.hmm_device_private.anon_write_child\nselftest:\n\n1. The test faults in a range then migrates it such that a device-private\n   THP range is established.\n\n2. The parent then migrates it to a device-private writable PMD entry whose\n   folio is entirely AnonExclusive with entire_mapcount=1, softdirty set\n   (accidentally correct write state).\n\n3. The parent forks and the PMD entries are set to device-private read only\n   entries, entire_mapcount=2, softdirty still set.\n\n4. [BUG] The child writes to the range then migrates to RAM - intending to\n   install non-writable migration entries - but replacing parent and child\n   PMD mappings with WRITABLE entries due to misinterpreting the softdirty\n   bit.\n\n5. In remove_migration_pmd(), if !softleaf_is_migration_read(entry) we\n   set the RMAP_EXCLUSIVE flag when calling folio_add_anon_rmap_pmd() for\n   both parent and child, which are therefore AnonExclusive.\n\n6. [SPLAT] Child sets migrated folio entire_mapcount=1, parent sets\n   entire_mapcount=2 and we end up with an AnonExclusive folio with\n   entire_mapcount=2! Assert fires in __folio_add_anon_rmap():\n\n\t\tVM_WARN_ON_FOLIO(folio_test_large(folio) \u0026\u0026\n\t\t\t\t folio_entire_mapcount(folio) \u003e 1 \u0026\u0026\n\t\t\t\t PageAnonExclusive(cur_page), folio)\n\nThis patch fixes the issue by correctly referencing the softleaf entry\nfields for writable, softdirty and uffd-wp in set_pmd_migration_entry().\n\nIt also only updates A/D flags if the entry is present as these are\notherwise not meaningful for a softleaf entry.\n\nThis patch also flips the if (!present) { ...  } else { ...  } logic in\nset_pmd_migration_entry() so it is easier to understand, and adds some\ncomments to make things clearer.\n\nI was able to bisect this to commit 775465fd26a3 (\"lib/test_hmm: add zone\ndevice private THP test infrastructure\") which first exposes this bug as\nit was the commit that permitted test_hmm to generate the test.\n\nHowever commit 65edfda6f3f2 (\"mm/rmap: extend rmap and migration support\ndevice-private entries\") is the commit that actually enabled this\nbehaviour.","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"mm/huge_memory: use correct flags for device private PMD entry","id":"CVE-2026-53155","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":"linux:linux_kernel","products":["linux:linux_kernel"],"type":"memory_corruption","year":"2026"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":2,"next":{"headline":"nvmem: core: fix use-after-free bugs in error paths","id":"CVE-2026-53156"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"mm/hugetlb: restore reservation on error in hugetlb folio copy paths","id":"CVE-2026-53154"},"products":["Linux"],"published":"2026-06-25","related":[{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Out-of-Bounds Write","id":"CVE-2026-53266","kev_date_added":"2026-09-18","published":"2026-06-25"},{"cvss_score":8.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Improper Input Validation","id":"CVE-2013-6282","kev_date_added":"2022-09-15","published":"2013-11-19"},{"cvss_score":8.4,"headline":"Linux Kernel Heap-Based Buffer Overflow","id":"CVE-2022-0185","kev_date_added":"2024-08-21","published":"2022-02-11"},{"cvss_score":8.4,"headline":"Linux Kernel Privilege Escalation","id":"CVE-2013-2094","kev_date_added":"2022-09-15","published":"2013-05-14"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Unspecified","id":"CVE-2026-53362","kev_date_added":"2026-08-27","published":"2026-07-04"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Missing Initialization of a Variable","id":"CVE-2026-46300","kev_date_added":"2026-10-28","published":"2026-05-23"},{"cvss_score":7.8,"headline":"Linux Kernel Race Condition","id":"CVE-2025-39964","kev_date_added":"2026-09-18","published":"2025-10-13"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":null,"exploitation":null,"technical_impact":null},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-06-25","vendors":["Linux"]},"summary":"Incorrect flag handling in Linux kernel huge memory management can corrupt reverse mapping state, potentially leading to system crashes or privilege escalation.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-53155/"}
