An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2026-53595 exists.\n\nAffected product: freescout-help-desk freescout. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-53595/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-53595/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-53595","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-53595/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-53595","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-jqj5-r72v-v29g"],"analysis":{"component_type":"web_application","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["account_takeover","privilege_escalation"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"FreeScout help desk","requires_auth":"none","summary":"An anonymous attacker can take over the lowest-ID activated user account in FreeScout by exploiting MySQL string comparison flaws in the user setup endpoint.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"auth_bypass"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[],"cvss":{"score":9.4,"severity":"critical","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:L","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-640","name":"Weak Password Recovery Mechanism for Forgotten Password"},{"id":"CWE-287","name":"Improper Authentication"},{"id":"CWE-178","name":"Improper Handling of Case Sensitivity"}],"description":"FreeScout is a free help desk and shared inbox built with PHP's Laravel framework. Prior to version 1.8.224, the public endpoint `POST /user-setup/{hash}/{invite_sent_at}` (`OpenController@userSetupSave`) selects the target account solely by its `invite_hash` column, then overwrites that account's email and password and logs in as it. No authentication, cookie, or prior session is required. After a user activates, FreeScout sets `invite_hash` to the empty string. On MySQL and MariaDB, `VARCHAR` equality ignores trailing spaces, so a single URL-encoded space (`%20`) matches the stored empty string and selects the lowest-id activated user. The expiry guard decrypts `invite_sent_at` with the target's password hash, but `Helper::decrypt` returns its raw input unchanged when decryption fails. A plaintext numeric value such as `9999999999` therefore passes the time-to-live check without any secret. The result is that an anonymous attacker sets the email and password of the lowest-id activated FreeScout account (a support agent, or an administrator if one was added by invitation) and authenticates as that account. Version 1.8.224 contains a fix.","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":"2026-07-21","github_poc":1,"max_poc_stars":0,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":1,"refs":[{"date":"2026-07-21T19:36:31Z","kind":"github_poc","ref":"https://github.com/0xdak/CVE-2026-53595_exploit","stars":0,"title":null},{"date":null,"kind":"nuclei","ref":"http/cves/2026/CVE-2026-53595.yaml","stars":null,"title":"FreeScout \u003c 1.8.224 - Invite Hash Authorization Bypass"}],"tier":"weaponised"},"has_fix":false,"headline":"FreeScout vulnerable to anonymous account takeover via /user-setup empty invite_hash on MySQL","id":"CVE-2026-53595","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":null,"products":[],"type":"auth_bypass","year":"2026"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":1,"next":{"headline":"FreeScout has unrestricted file upload without rate limiting that leads to resource exhaustion (DoS)","id":"CVE-2026-53596"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"FreeScout has Arbitrary File Read in App Logs Viewer via Forged Encrypted Path","id":"CVE-2026-53594"},"products":["freescout"],"published":"2026-07-20","related":[],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"MIT","name":"Nuclei templates"},{"class":"open","licence":"CC0","name":"PoC-in-GitHub"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"yes","exploitation":"poc","technical_impact":"total"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-07-21","vendors":["freescout-help-desk"]},"summary":"An anonymous attacker can take over the lowest-ID activated user account in FreeScout by exploiting MySQL string comparison flaws in the user setup endpoint.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-53595/"}
