It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, and only if a user opens a file or follows a link.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2026-59944 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected packages and fixed versions:\n- composer/composer (Packagist): affected from 1.0; fixed in 2.2.30\n- composer/composer (Packagist): affected from 1.0; fixed in 2.2.30\n- composer/composer (Packagist): affected from 2.3.0; fixed in 2.10.3\n- composer/composer (Packagist): affected from 2.3.0; fixed in 2.10.3\n- composer (Bitnami): affected from 1.0.0; fixed in 2.2.30, 2.10.3\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-59944/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-59944/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-59944","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-59944/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-59944","record":{"aliases":["BIT-composer-2026-59944","DEBIAN-CVE-2026-59944","GHSA-96h3-5x6v-m776","MINI-482r-fqp5-8wh3","MINI-w5pg-ffpr-8px2","UBUNTU-CVE-2026-59944","openSUSE-SU-2026:11633-1"],"analysis":{"component_type":"developer_tool","fix_type":"upgrade","impacts":["privilege_escalation","security_bypass"],"network_reachable":"adjacent_or_local","non_default_config":true,"product_category":"PHP dependency manager","requires_auth":"none","summary":"A malicious package can bypass binary path hardening via symlinks or metadata, allowing execution of external files with modified permissions.","user_interaction":"required","vuln_class":"path_traversal"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"GitHub_M","cpe":[],"cvss":{"score":6.1,"severity":"medium","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-59","name":"Improper Link Resolution Before File Access"},{"id":"CWE-22","name":"Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory"}],"description":"Composer is a dependency Manager for the PHP language. From 1.0 until 2.2.30 and from 2.3.0 until 2.10.3, a malicious or compromised dependency can bypass the earlier CVE-2026-59946 binary-path hardening because Composer validates literal parent-directory segments only during dependency resolution, while the symlink and installed-metadata paths described by the advisory skip that validation. A package can ship an in-package binary symlink that resolves outside its installation directory, or attacker-influenced vendor/composer/installed.json metadata can provide an escaping binary path during a reinstall or regeneration of missing vendor/bin entries. The installed-metadata path is reachable only when the vendor directory was not populated by the same validated install run, such as when it is restored from an untrusted cache, copied from an earlier build stage, carried over from an older Composer run, or writable by a lower-trust build step. Composer can follow the path, change the external target's permissions to make it world-readable and executable, and create a runnable vendor/bin proxy to that external file. The issue does not directly read or transmit data and does not by itself provide remote code execution. This issue is fixed in versions 2.2.30 and 2.10.3.","ecosystems":["Bitnami","Packagist","openSUSE:Tumbleweed"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"Composer: CVE-2026-59946 fix bypass via symlinked package bin path","id":"CVE-2026-59944","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":"Bitnami","product":null,"products":[],"type":"path_traversal","year":"2026"},"n_packages":6,"n_references":5,"next":{"headline":"Composer: Path traversal in package bin field lets dependencies chmod arbitrary host files","id":"CVE-2026-59946"},"packages":[{"ecosystem":"Bitnami","fixed":["2.2.30","2.10.3"],"introduced":["1.0.0","2.3.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"composer","purl":"pkg:bitnami/composer","source":"BIT-composer-2026-59944"},{"ecosystem":"Packagist","fixed":["2.2.30"],"introduced":["1.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"composer/composer","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-96h3-5x6v-m776"},{"ecosystem":"Packagist","fixed":["2.2.30"],"introduced":["1.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"composer/composer","purl":"pkg:composer/composer/composer","source":"GHSA-96h3-5x6v-m776"},{"ecosystem":"Packagist","fixed":["2.10.3"],"introduced":["2.3.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"composer/composer","purl":null,"source":"GHSA-96h3-5x6v-m776"},{"ecosystem":"Packagist","fixed":["2.10.3"],"introduced":["2.3.0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"composer/composer","purl":"pkg:composer/composer/composer","source":"GHSA-96h3-5x6v-m776"},{"ecosystem":"openSUSE:Tumbleweed","fixed":["2.10.3-1.1"],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"php-composer2","purl":"pkg:rpm/opensuse/php-composer2\u0026distro=openSUSE%20Tumbleweed","source":"openSUSE-SU-2026:11633-1"}],"prev":{"headline":"Dompdf: Embedded SVG images can leak existence of files and directories within the filesystem","id":"CVE-2026-59943"},"products":["composer"],"published":"2026-09-16","related":[],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"Apache-2.0","name":"Bitnami","prefix":"BIT"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"GitHub Advisory Database","prefix":"GHSA"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CC BY 4.0","name":"SUSE","prefix":"openSUSE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"none","technical_impact":"partial"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-09-16","vendors":["composer"]},"summary":"A malicious package can bypass binary path hardening via symlinks or metadata, allowing execution of external files with modified permissions.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-59944/"}
