It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2026-68172 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: Linux. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-68172/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-68172/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-68172","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-68172/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-68172","record":{"aliases":["BELL-CVE-2026-68172","DEBIAN-CVE-2026-68172","GHSA-mc2f-cm9p-679q","UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68172"],"analysis":{"component_type":"kernel","fix_type":"patch","impacts":["denial_of_service"],"network_reachable":"adjacent_or_local","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Linux kernel","requires_auth":"low_privilege","summary":"A local attacker can trigger a kernel panic by causing the arm64 huge_ptep_get function to dereference an invalid pointer when handling unaligned addresses.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"null_dereference"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"Linux","cpe":[],"cvss":{"score":7.1,"severity":"high","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[],"description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\narm64: make huge_ptep_get handled unaligned addresses\n\nhuge_ptep_get() can be handed a virtual address pointing to the middle\nof a contpmd/contpte mapped hugetlb folio (examples of callers are\npagemap_hugetlb_range, page_mapped_in_vma).\n\nThe arm64 helper rewalks the pgtables in find_num_contig to answer\nwhether the huge pte we have maps a contpmd or a contpte hugetlb folio,\nand returns CONT_PMDS or CONT_PTES, so that it can collect a/d bits over\nthe contiguous ptes. We can falsely return CONT_PTES instead of\nCONT_PMDS if the addr is not aligned. On systems where CONT_PTES !=\nCONT_PMDS (meaning page size is 16K), we could collect excess A/D bit\nstate, meaning extra work for the kernel. Even worse, we may iterate\nbeyond the PTE table and dereference a garbage ptep pointer to access\nphysical memory we don't own. Since the ptep pointer is a linear map\naddress, we may run off the end of the linear map or into a hole,\ndereference a VA not mapped into the kernel pgtables and cause kernel\npanic.\n\nFix this by aligning the pmdp pointer down to a contpmd base before\nchecking equality with the passed huge pte pointer, to correctly answer\nwhether the huge pte is the base of a contpmd block.","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"arm64: make huge_ptep_get handled unaligned addresses","id":"CVE-2026-68172","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":null,"products":[],"type":"null_dereference","year":"2026"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":3,"next":{"headline":"ublk: wait on ublk_dev_ready() instead of ub-\u003ecompletion","id":"CVE-2026-68173"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"This CVE ID has been rejected or withdrawn by its CVE Numbering Authority.","id":"CVE-2026-68171"},"products":["Linux"],"published":"2026-08-10","related":[],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":null,"exploitation":null,"technical_impact":null},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-08-17","vendors":["Linux"]},"summary":"A local attacker can trigger a kernel panic by causing the arm64 huge_ptep_get function to dereference an invalid pointer when handling unaligned addresses.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-68172/"}
